Flipster and/or SansAmp

This isn't a "vs." thread so much as it is to see how well the two would work together, how similar they are/aren't. I've never had the chance to play through an old flip top amp, so I don't really know what the sound is live (though I'm sure I've heard it on countless recordings). I already have a SansAmp, but I'm entertaining the idea of having both a SansAmp and a Flipster and using them as preamps to drive a power amp, putting them in a double loop pedal to let me choose which one to use at any given time. Do the two classic Ampeg sounds compliment each other? I know it's largely personal taste, but I'm asking for just that... your personal tastes/experience. Are the sounds similar enough that it might not be worth having the second preamp, or would the combination (also throwing in a Fulltone Bassdive before one or the other or both when I want it) give you a pretty useful palette of vintage sounds?

Brian

never found a need / want for the sansamp... love my flipster. I dig the tones some people get with the sansamp though.

Are they very similar or is there enough of a difference that you could get two good and useful, but different, sounds? I've just never gotten to hear a flip top amp, so I'd hate to buy/build a Flipster only to find that it's really similar to the SansAmp. If my impression of the Flipster is correct, I'm thinking of having it for a "clean" tone with some tube fatness and using the SansAmp for something a bit heftier (especially with the Bass-Drive running in front of it).

Flipster - $55 from OLC

ART Tube MP - $44

There you have it - a really simple preamp for under $100

and it should work great with any power amp.

James, do you have any samples of the Flipster?

How's the new band going?

Just the ones posted on the www.olcircuits.com page... the full, uncut version is linked in the flipster thread, but my server is off line at the moment (I just opened a ticket with them).

The band is ok... just spoke with the Singer/main guitarist and we are getting back together on Thursday. I've got my Flipster back from having the total gain lowered... so new clips will be coming soon.

Not bad at all. I like your choice of basslines too.
