After a very long hunt to find
MY doom tone, I found it. I've bought and sold multiple fuzz pedals and luckily didn't lose too much in the process.
I tried the Bass Big Muff Pi, Catalinbread SFT (which I might buy again when I get my P-bass from Dan), Wounded Paw Attack Goat, and the Pickle Pie B. I sold the first three and traded the PPB recently for a Phat Phuk B.
Right now I have a Rat Tail, AGRO, and a Bluebeard. I love all three and wouldn't trade them for anything (that I can think of). Since the Phat Phuk arrived in the mail today, I figure I'd try it out and get the trim pot to where I like it. I did just that. Then I thought, "I'm going to try it with the Bluebeard!" A bit of fiddling and it hit me. The tone I've been looking for.
With every turn of a knob, I had to play the main riff to Electric Wizard's "Funeralopolis". When I got to the right setting, that riff just sounded so good.
Unfortunately I have no soundclips for you guys, but here's the setup that helped me achieve what I've been wanting to get for ages now...
Peavey T-40 with a fresh set of Chromes. Neck pickup with the tone rolled to 9 (although, it sounds good with both pickups, the bridge pickup, and the bridge pickup out of phase).
Ampeg SVT-CL
Gain - 2:00
Ultra Hi - Disengaged
Ultra Lo - Disengaged (sometimes I like to engage this)
Bass - 10:30
Midrange - 2:00
Frequency - 4
Treble - 1:00
Master - 8:30
The Master is fairly low because my mom is trying to sleep and this is the only amp I have. Pretty nice practice/basement amp. When I turn this up louder for practicing or gigging, I'm sure I'll have to adjust the gain (either on the amp or pedal) a smidgen.
Unfortunately I can't tell you what the trim pot is set at on the PPB, but the knob is rolled to about 1:00.
The Bluebeard's settings are roughly 11:00, 2:00, 11:00. Again, when I crank the volume, I'm sure I'll have to adjust the volume/gain by a hair.
Signal:
Bass -> Bluebeard -> PPB -> SVT-CL - > SVT810E. Tomorrow I'll try this with the PPB and the Bluebeard reversed to see if it makes any difference. I'm pretty damn happy, though!
Now, some of you will read this and say, "Who gives a s***?" Well, to answer the question, I do... and so does behndy.
I'm sure a lot of people out there will be able to use this as a starter guide to find their tone. They might not have the exact setup, but they might have the same pedals, or the bass and the amp. The Bluebeard, as described by Laz, is like a chainsaw. With the PPB engaged, it almost gives it a little more clarity and headroom. If I rolled the bass on my amp up a little (or engaged Ultra Lo), I'm sure I could destroy a subway in a Toronto from my basement.
Maybe I wasted my time posting this, maybe I didn't. For all I know, this thread will end up on page 20 by tomorrow.
Have fun reading,
Josh
