Frazz Dazzler Question

Sign in to disble this ad
This goes to anyone out there that has owned/used a Dr. Scientist Frazz Dazzler or a Zvex Mastotron (or better yet both).

How do they compare? Both seem to be on the synthier, gated-ish, side of things. Both seem to handle lows well (Frazz even has a blend knob). I'm pretty close to buying a Frazz and comparing them myself, but I don't really have the cash to do that. I've always liked my Mastotron, but it just seems to have a little something missing, and I think the Frazz may be able to take its place. Any comments, opinions, or just exclamations would great.

Thanks,

Proton

For gated stuff I haven't been able to beat the brown dog, for massive amounts of pure heaven in the form of synth-like distortion the multiwave bass distortion is amazing.

I can't really compare the two since I only tried the Mastotron in store, but I do own the Frazz (actually the older Bazz Dazzzler, the old Frazzs' didn't have mix knobs)

Every now and then I get the urge to change it for something else, but then I play it and the crazy wall of fuzz fills my heart will glee. I call this pedal "hysteria in a box" The mix allows a massive low end. And to me the gated fuzz sounds a little more controled than the Mastotron. I guess one could call it synthy if comparing to let's say a Muff, but next to my assmaster it's not synthy at all, but then again I run the gain at about 80%!!! You get the gate to engage more with the gain rolled back. All in all, it's quite a vesatile pedal.

This pedal has survived my many pedalboard changes, and despite my ever changing tastes, it's still my go to pedal for when I need a massive wall of bonecrushing fuzz.

I think talkbass needs to write there own sonic dictionary because the more I search this site, the more I realize that terms to describe sound are the most subjective entities. Synthy is one of the worst. Perfect example: I don't think the AssMaster is really all that synthy. IMHO. I'm gonna have to try the Frazz. It sounds, and looks, so damn cool.

The Frazz Dazzler is very "zippery" or "velcro-y" for lack of better terms, at least when used as a gated fuzz. It isn't versatile and I would never want it as my only fuzz pedal, but what it does it does well.

FWIW I like it MUCH more on guitar than I do on bass. My old guitar player was looking for a fuzz for a tone like the Edge's during the break in Discotheque (about 2:15 in) and the Frazz Dazzler does it pretty well.

They're not the easiest pedals to get a hold of. I purchased mine from PedalHead.
Here's an email I recently got from them:

Hello everybody, the long awaited PEDALHEAD order from DrScientist has come!

I'm getting ready to put in an order with DrScientist. Now here's the trick. I can only purchase 30 DrScientist pedals at a time (then I get back in line to place another order, which could be 6 months to a year), so, if you'd like to secure your spot, I'm taking pre orders. Check out the price list and let me know if you want one asap!!! If you're not currently in the market, feel free to forward this on to anyone you think would be!

Frazz Dazzler - $200
The Cleanness - $200
Woofer Wailer - $200
The Tremolessence - $225
Sunny Day Delay - $250
Cosmichorus - $275
Reverberator (Mini) - $225

for more info, check out: www.drscientist.ca
Ryan (dr scientist himself) has been telling me about the Mini Reverberators, and they are sweeeet! They have exactly the same tone and function as the previous Reverberators, only they are smaller to create more room on your board! They are in the same size box as the Frazz Dazzler. S&H is $10 anywhere in the lower 48, please inquire for Alaska, Hawaii, and international shipping.

All pre-orders are paid ahead of time and are done via paypal.

All the Best!
Philip

Cool, thanks for heads up. Part of the reason my interest is sparked is I could get a flawless, bad-ass looking one for $165 shipped tomorrow.

And Jared, to what you were saying about the sound quality. It is this velcro nature that makes it appealing to me. Obviously it won't be my only fuzz. I have the Orbit and Musket. I'm looking at it to kind of replace my Mastotron. Which I have setup to be a very biting fuzz. Hell maybe if I liked it, I'd just keep both.
