Looking to expand my tone and sound on my fretless. Currently not using any pedal at all, but hearing some great sounds from different players. So, what types of effects do you use on your fretlesses to enhance the original great "whah" sound we love so well?

Gets a whole synthy thing going that's hard to beat.

A little of each of the following: Compression, reverb, chorus, and sometimes delay. The octave divider idea mentioned is great as well if it fits the song. |

I also really like a synth pedal. Since the fretless is so expressive, you can get very nice vibrato and portamento going on.
Markbass SS has both synth and octaver in it, and that's part of why I'm digging it lately. |

I dream of cobbling an old organ or guitar amp's spring/tube 'verb together w/a gutted, big old Morley or similar shell to dial in the level/amount.

Reverb is cool when the band backs off and you get a solo, but it can muddy your sound in the mix if you're not super careful. Flanger can be pretty interesting as well.

Chorus and reverb can help emphasize the fretless tone.
Light compression can be used for a bit of smoothing while keeping nearly all the dynamics or very heavy compression can be used to give that fat, smushed Tony Levin sound.
Octavers and filters (and dedicated synth pedals) can take on a much more synthy character when used on a fretless
Personally I also like flanger and delay with a fretless for atmospheric passages. Then again, I love fuzz with fretless too. About the only effect that I like (love maybe) on fretted that I don't like on fretless is phaser.
If I had to pick one favorite it would be octaver followed closely by filter. |

| | | | I use the MXR Micro Flanger and it really give a nice creamy sound without the typical metallic sounds you find with a flanger. I also use a LR Baggs Venue preamp that really sweetens up the sound as well.
