Fulltone Bass Drive Mosfet or Maxon OD808 or BB Preamp? Advise needed

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all, I am going to get a new driver to replace my Ashdown Bass Drive FX. I am choosing between Fulltone Bass Drive Mosfet, Maxon OD808 and Xotic Bass BB Preamp. Which one is better sounding with bass? I tried BB Preamp and I think its a distortion. Maybe I will get one, but not now. I tried Maxon OD808 too, I think its quite good for bass, the only bad thing is its not true bypass. Someone using or tried Maxon OD808 before? Could anyone give some advise?

But, I never tried Fulltone Bass Drive Mosfet. Also I never heard any demo about it. Could anyone upload a demo of it? Also give some advise.

Also, how about Ampeg Scrambler Overdrive pedal? Is it a great driver?

Or is there any other Billy Sheehan sounding overdriver?

Thanks a lot

There's some good bass-drive samples in the effects clip database.

I have owned both the Maxon 808 and the Fulltone.

The Maxon is just a tubescreamer, complete with mid hump (which I personally like) and bass cut. That said, the bass cut was not as extreme as other Tubescreamers I have tried for some reason, and since I just left it on the whole time I just turned up the bass on my amp a bit.

The Fulltone is based on a Tubescreamer but eliminates the bass cut problem and allows you to control the mid hump. It also has the compcut mode and a boost.

While these two pedals are similar, the Maxon just made me happier, cheaper too.

i had the original Bass-Drive, and it was pretty cool for a 2-channel OD/distortion, i think the current MOSFET versions should be even better (apparently MOSFET is more tube-like)

i also own an Ampeg Scrambler reissue, and to be honest, as a usable bass fx, its a bit of a one trick pony, on the recommended 'Bass Fuzz' setting, its overall effect is kinda like a tidier muff, it should be noted that there is no gain or level controls, so really its a question of balancing the low-response with the output volume, using the two controls: TEXTURE (ie: tone) and BALANCE (ie: clean blend). to use it as a bass fuzz (which is what it is advertised as, a fuzz, not an OD)its quite cool, and if you boost the texture (you will loose lows but will gain general volume) you get a 'wet-sounding' fuzz, not unlike clips of the B:AssMaster i've heard.
also the pedal seems quite responsive to playing dynamics

heres a demo i put together a few months ago

also, ill mention this:
although its definitely not an OD, in a mix, the MXR Bass Blowtorch can do a great Billy Sheehan impression, especially on higher-register notes, its mid-range focus cuts through the mix, and Billy's tone has a great mid-focus, which is why it always pops out.

also in a similar vein, the ashdown James LoMenzo Hyperdrive is apparently the way forward, ive not heard it or used it, but its a mid-range drive/distortion with tonnes of options, and its just had an awesome review in this months Bass Guitar Magazine (british publication)
