Fulltone Bass-drive Version 1 vs MOSFET

Sign in to disble this ad
well.. as a rarity for British citizens, i just got a used original Fulltone Bassdrive off ebay for almost half of what the current MOSFET model costs new. i just bought it, so wont get it for few days, id just like to know how it compares to the MOSFET version. i did a few searches, but couldnt find much. i know both models have the comp-cut mode, but i think the MOSFET has a few other settings too.

also, ive got another question about it: Comp-cut and Boost:
is comp-cut just a clean volume boost to drive a tube amp, and BOOST is just a volume boost of whatever bassdrive setting your using?

i've been dying to get a bassdrive for a long time, i hope this one wont dissappoint

comp-cut is the "clean" mode...really a clean boost with the power it kicks out. it's pretty much a "mode" setting for the OD... it has comp-cut, vintage and modern-style OD's available via the toggle. the MOSFET version has another toggle to use as normal or MOSFET. normal is the same design as the early version peals; MOSFET is...MOSFET.

The boost switch activates the 2nd gain stage, so where you set the knob determines the amount of breakup.

good luck

i like my original version bassdrive. i tried out a mosfet version when i was trying out my gretsch (to make sure it sounded good on overdrive) and i honestly couldn't tell a huge difference. the bassdrive is pretty versatile in itself, so unless i just totally missed something i don't think you'll miss too much. anyone with more experience with both is more than welcome to correct me though

sweet, cheers guys. im in a bit of a dilema now tho, i bought the Bassdrive on a whim coz i saw it there, but now ive got the bassdrive and a ElectroniX MessDrive Hybrid on the way, and a Russian Big Muff, an MXR Blowtorch and a sansamp sitting on my pedal board, and of course the MXR El Grande and the tech 21 VT Bass are out soon too.

too much GAS, hopefully the Messdrive will replace the muff, the bassdrive will replace the Boss Blues Driver (which i just sold) as my light overdrive, and the VT will replace my sansamp as my dirty-ish 'clean' tone

i have too many overdrives, but i just love them.

yeah, i try not to have something on all the time, i mean the blowtorch i just use it in 1 song at the moment, and its perfect for what i want.

i was pleasantly supprised about how well the russian muff performs in a band setting, no low end loss as such, but the mids suffer and i loose the punch.

the Boss blues driver was great too, but having to use it with the boss line selector to give it a clean blend was a bit of hassle than i guess the Bassdrive will solve more than adequately.

i guess my way of finding the sounds i want is just by buying everything and selling on what i dont want.

Comp-cut mode is nice but can anyone tell me what the overdrive knob does on comp-cut mode? At least I have found that it affects on sound. Is bassdrive more like fatboost on comp-cut mode than clean boost?

from what i noticed with my one, i think the overdrive was more like a volume boost in comp-cut, im not entirely sure, i sold my bass-drive a while back.

It sounds something like that, but it doesn`t make much sense. Then there would be 3 volume knobs in comp-cut mode (volume, OD=volume & boost).

yeah i totally know what you mean, i only tried it (comp-cut) once to see what it did, as i dont have a tube amp, there wasnt any point in me using it. in the end i sold off the pedal completely, i think that the MOSFET version would be excellent, but the first version Bass-drive wasnt a tubey as i was expecting.
