Fulltone Bass drive vs. Bass Big Muff

Sign in to disble this ad
I have been reading about the bass big muff and was wondering what the major difference is between it and the Fulltone Bass Drive Mosfet.
Thanks

One's a fuzz, one's an overdrive.

Valerus nailed it. They're very different. In the most basic sense of "clipping", they both do it. But when it comes to guitar and bass distortion, the wide variety of sounds and degree of gain/distortion has produced three somewhat distinct categories:

Overdrive
"Distortion"
Fuzz

Overdrive and fuzz are easy to tell apart. But "distortion" lies in between... and we always fight about that.

AFAIC, "distortion", when discussed here, usually is talking about those harsher, high-gain, yet defined sounds that remind you more of modern guitar distortion.

Hey guys thanks for the info. I am an old school bassist who typically did not use effects and have been invited into a couple of bands where I could use it. Correct me, but if I want more of an SVT tone, the Fulltone would be the choice.

Uh... that's a trick question, really. It doesn't get an SVT-like tone. But if you're trying to get the sound of tubes pushed into overdrive, then it'll do that.

The Bass Big Muff goes far, far beyond that. Definitely not what you want.

Got Both

I've got both. I must have bad ears, because to me they can sound quite similar at some settings. Sometimes I run the Bass Big Muff into the Bass-Drive with the Bass-drive comp-cut switch set on. I do the same with my TurboRat and Bass-Drive.

As Mystic said, trick question. However if you search on SVT here in the fx forum, you'll get a lot of discussion of how most people try to get that sound (hint: Tech21).

I'm planning on looking at the Tech21 VT bass pedal. It's supposed to nail the SVT sound, the B15 sound, and even a distorted overdriven type of sound.

It's gotten good reviews on here, so far. Just another option in a crowded world of overdrives/distortions/fuzzes.

I seem to be one of the few who prefers the SA Bassdriver to the VT Bass.
I got mine a couple of days ago and I am trying hard to get a punchy, neither harsh nor scooped pick sound with the VT Bass. This has never been an issue with the Bassdriver.
Even further, I never experienced excessive mid scoop with the Bassdriver.
So I'll probably sell mine.
(Btw. the same goes for my just aquired Fulltone Bass-drive)

You won't be disappointed.

I'd start with the tuner first, then chorus?

oh well, i'm bad with determining order. just find one that sounds good (or just doesn't sound bad)
