Fulltone Bass-Drive vs Fat-Boost (older grey model)

Sign in to disble this ad
Well, I did a search to see if there was anything on this already, but I couldn't find much... Has anyone ever owned/played both pedals to give a direct comparison between them? I just sold my Bass-Drive MOSFET... It was a great pedal; just not quite what I wanted... And far more versatile than I needed (I'm looking more for one or two really good tones than a pedal that can do many things). Anyway, I like a light OD tone (for reference, all the lower drive sounds on the Blueberry vs. Bass-Drive vs. Hematoma thread are a good approximation of what I like... but the first two Blueberry clips are my favorites of those), and while the Bass-Drive did it pretty well, it just wasn't quite what I was hearing in my head... a little grittier than I want... I want something warm, thick, and fat (but still mild)... this was too... brittle-sounding, to me. So how does the older grey Fat-Boost compare? Could it be more what I'm looking for, or is it likely to be close to the Bass-Drive? Thanks, guys.

I have owned both, and in fact I owned them at the same time. The Fat Boost is a great pedal, but I don't think it's what you're looking for. "Fat" in this case is like "guitarist fat", i.e. some added harmonic content. It's not "bassist fat" which you can use for frying donuts or squashing chihuahuas. I did like the Fat Boost a lot better than the Bassdrive, and it is capable of a nicer mild overdrive IMO, but honestly it cannot achieve any of the sounds of the Blueberry.

...And I do realize that the Blueberry is a unique pedal that nothing else can really replace. And for that matter, I also liked the low gain clip of the Bass-Drive in that thread... Just wasn't quite perfect for me in my rig, so I thought it was time to look elsewhere.
