+1 for envelope filters, I have 7. lol

I've found lately that octave can also be very funky too, I just picked up a MXR M-288 Bass Octave Deluxe that's pretty awesome.

If you haven't played with effects much (or at all), I'd suggest going with a decent multi-effect pedal. It'd let you explore a good range of effects and see what does it for you. Then depending on what (or how many) you like, you could switch over to single effect pedals.

The Boss multi pedals are always pretty good, I've heard some pretty good things about the Zoom B2.1u, maybe Digitech, etc. You also might be able to find something used around here or on ebay for not a lot of bucks. I found an older Digitech BP-8 that I really liked, maybe you could try an older Boss like a GT-6B, too.

Just some thoughts.

Yep, the mid boost is key! I posted a review here (post #338) with clips:

For me, the main funk effects (in order) are:

Envelope filter
Octaver
Phaser
Fuzz (ideally gated)
Dedicated Synth (Akai Deep Impact, Korg G5)
Wah

I've never had all of them on one board before. And I've played funk gigs with no effects. Still, I always like having at least a filter on hand.

A decent thumb and middle finger technique and/or a good overhand fingering technique(ask your girlfriend) and a since of time, swing, uglyface, ungh, hitme and master the good gawd count (sometimes before, on or after the beat.) snd Work on your back hump (again ask girlfriend) Start here first!

Electro Harmonix Bass Microsynth, if you have $280... You get a fuzz, octaver, and filter in one unit, and then some. Pure funk bliss... Basstastic.

THUMB technique??!! There isn't much technique involved in letting it stick on top of my pick up so my fingers can do their work. Some of you people have some crazy ideas.

I've got a ZOOM BFX-708 ... if you're looking for funk ... it's got quite few settings to choose from. You can even change them up, and save them as another "patch".

It's built as well as any ZOOM effects box ... so figure changing it out every once in a while (depending on how careful you are with it). The good thing is, there pretty inexpensive as far as effects boxes go.

It also has a headphone jack, so using it for practice is super easy ... no amp needed!

Add in a wah as well. I have that combo (EXH BMS and 105q) and I love it. Just the wah by itself can be funky as well.
