Which Fuzz???

Sign in to disble this ad
Okay so I think I have narrowed down my choices to these fuzz pedals but I only have room and $ for one of them. So which is the best choice based on sound, ease of use, versatility, etc?

1. Iron Ether Oxide
2. Smallsound/Bigsound Team Awesome Fuzzmachine
3. Earthbound Audio Supercollider
4. Wren & Cuff Pickle Pie B

I haven't owned any of those pedals, but from what I've heard and what I've read the Iron Ether Oxide seems to have the most versatility. The Pickle Pie B seems the easiest to use with only 3 controls and a blend.

You've picked fantastic fuzz pedals, though, with different fuzz characteristics. The Pickle Pie B and Supercollider are muff-variants, the Oxide is an original design that can achieve Wooly Mammoth and B:assMaster type fuzz tones, and the SS/BS Fuzzmachine is just awesome itself. Make sure you know what type of fuzz tone you want before you decide how much you're going to spend.

I only have experience with the Oxide, but it fits all of your criteria nicely. Sounds great, is easy to use and understand, and is know for it's versatility. The TAFM seems like an incredibly versatile pedal, also.

A good Muff based fuzz that gets a lot of love around here is the Fuzzrocious Grey Stache or Grey Stache +

There's no way anyone can help you pick one based on what you've posted.

Try 'em all, and use the one that sounds best to you.

+1

I have the Supercollider. Not as much flexibilty as you probably want. Easy to use sounds great, but kind of a one trick pony.

I want a fuzz with more grunt than fizz, also, don't wanna lose articulation or punch too much. The sound in my head looks like a HUGE black/purple wall of rolling DENSE wool with dark rain clouds and lightning above it that's just a step behind you, ready to crush you into unrecognizableness.

Would you recommend the SC for that kinda thing?

Yes.

I have a SC, and it'll do that very, very well.

Be prepared for some articulation loss and a lot of feedback between notes, though.

I would recommend the Earthquaker Devices Hoof fuzz to you. I have a Supercollider, Battering Ram & Musket and the Hoof has fast become my favorite of the 4. Super articulate, spooky quiet (even at high gain) and THICK...

FWIW, I play an active 5-string bass.

I've got a few Supercollider Beasts, Love em for Doomy Muff Fuzz.
Also from your list I haz the rather amazing Iron Ether Oxide.
Fantastic Fuzz, and really rather versatile as many will mention.
Not much like a Muff though!
As to the other two, (TAFM & Pickle Pie B) I'd love to give them a go, as they both get some serious props from people here who's opinion on Fuzz I'd trust.
I've got to hold for a while on importing any more Fuzz from the States though...

He says with a Fuzzrocious Stache+ just leaving Customs.

@Wud, I'll hopefully be able to say the same thing in about a month

Are you based in the UK?

If you want versatile,...check out the McSpunkle FX Gnomeratron VTF. It will do everything from classic vintagey fuzz to angry self oscillations and synthy sounds and stuff.

Do want,...I can haz and stuff.
