Fuzz for christmas.. explaining the need for one to parents?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok, i've been wanting a Team Awesome Fuzz Machine for forever and have been talking to Brian about buying one. I asked my parents for it as my christmas present, and they asked why. Obviously I want to use it for writing stuff which has been moving towards a more gritty feel to it, but it's also fun and i'm hoping that with the fuzz and my Qtron+ i can get some cool synthy sounds for random writing.
But how do I explain this to completely non-musical parents? What might show them why I want it?

Just tell them that adding the pedal will give you more tonal capabilities then you have with out it.

Not the specific pedal, but show them "Hysteria" by Muse, and if they don't get it from that... Your parents don't love you.

Dude! Your parents asked why? Just tell them it's because they love you and if they want to show that love, they'll buy you this kick ass pedal and stop asking questions.

Seriously though, I'd just explain to them that it's what you really want. Not a very expensive present either.

Tell them that it's a tool necessary to maintain your speakers -- it puts them through their paces by sending frequencies not used in average playing. You have to do it a few times a year and it would really be a waste of money to have to purchase several one-time pedal testers (Bass Big Muff) when you can just buy the TAFM and be set for life.

as a dad i think just saying you want to use it for writing stuff is a perfect reason.

haha so true, even my parents can understand and hear the tonal differences between clean bass and the bass in Hysteria.

Surprise your mom by saying that you don't need gifts...you'd just like to spend quality family time with her. Warm, fuzzy feelings will still push the tubes in your preamp. Jazz Ad is right. You don't need fuzz, you want fuzz.

this sounds like a joke about baking that constantly gets thrown around in my house "you can't knead the dough, you have to want it."

=P

lol just leave subtle hints, like ... 1000 post it notes all over the house.

Guilt is the only thing I need for Christmas. Sweet, sweet guilt.

Haha I asked my parents for a VT deluxe for Christmas. When they asked why, I said, cuz Jimmy said it was the pedal of the future, and I don't wanna be left behind!

No I didn't say that. But I did explain the amp sim/overdrive functions of the pedal in great detail. After a while they gave up and were like, okay you can have it. ^.^

Is it just me, or are effects pedal the hardest thing to convince people to buy you, instrument wise? Other than maybe tuners and bridges lol

Tell them you need more fuzz because fuzz is more awesome than no fuzz and more is more and thus it is mandatory.

Absolutely they are. Although I wouldn't even bother asking for tuners or bridges. If I needed them I think I would just ask for money and maybe explain what I'd be using it for.

Last year I asked for a Boomerang III for Christmas. It was difficult trying to explain to my mom what it was, so I just told her I'll email the guy and get everything set up, and all she has to do is send the money.

As for why she's bugging you about it, I'm guessing she watches too much Oprah or similar shows that convinces moms that all their kids are "sexting" over "twitter" while on drugs.
