Fuzz Face q.: Boutique Late 60's or Germanium standard

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey all,

Someone is sending me all of the parts (part of a trade) to build either a Late 60's Boutique or a Germanium Standard Fuzz Face.

Any thoughts on which would be better for bass?

I'll be building off of the GGG layouts:

First you need to figure out whether you want silicon or germanium (or a mix) and then go from there. Then figure out how much flexibility you would like for the circuit. The better option for bass will be the circuit that has the biggest input and output capacitors.

How would you describe the differences between silicon and germanium? I'm definitely going to socket everything so that I can switch them in and out.

And the in/out caps will be big enough for bass.

Germanium is smoother/mellower and silicon is in your face with fuzz.

I think the germanium is closer to what I want. I had a wooly mammoth clone and it was just too much in your face.

Germaniums are going to be included with what I get, so that's good. Though probably what I should do is put the germs and silicons on a switch so that I can have both. That I'll have to look up!

Any idea what the diff is between the 60s Boutique and Straight Germ offhand?

Germanium is good. But there is a bunch of mojo floating around them too. I am using a Dunlop Fuzz Face with some Germanium in it. Awesome.
