Fuzz factory Vs. Wooly mammoth?

Sign in to disble this ad
I did a search but it doesnt seem that this has been covered before.

How do these two stack up to eachother? Now that the fuzz factor is available cheaply(-er) in the vexter series i was thinking about picking one up instead of the $300 wooly mammoth. Has anyone tried a FF on bass?

Thanks in advance

I tried the vexter a while ago. Can't remember how it was, so helpful I know .

I'd recommend the Mastotron though...no hesitation .

No worries

Does the Mastotron get gatey and synthy? That's prettymuch what i'm going for right now.

Yes, very well. There's soundclips around here somewhere I think.

Intriguing! I just checked out some demos and that may work.

Valerus said in another thread that the FF was essentially the same as a wooly mammoth, only glitchier and harder to dial in, which isnt that large of a setback. Time to find a music store with everything in stock

Woolly Mammoth is designed to handle frequencies several octaves below audability, where as fuzz factory is not designed for bass. It might work fine though, I've never tried it with bass.

The Fuzz Factory and Woolly Mammoth also have rather different controls that you should consider.

Mastotron I have no experience with.

Like you said in the last post, you should definitely try them all out before making a decision.

I had a Mastotron and Woolly at the same time, and for me personally I preferred the Mastotron. I also use it for the gatey thing as well. I love it! For the price I think it is a wonderful pedal.

I liked the sound of my bass through the not-Vexter Fuzz Factory I tried. Very sharp, lively and responsive.
Then again, I think the Mammoth sounds like dog farts and may be the most overrated pedal ever so I may not be the best person to ask.

I have the vexter fuzz factory and the woolly mammoth. I kind of like some of the sounds I can get with the vexter, but in most settings it's going to completely get rid of your low end, making it a bit impracticable to use by itself if you're just looking for a bass fuzz. It would probably sound mighty fine run into an octave or with a blender, though. I like the mammoth, but it can be a bit temperamental, and can sound pretty mediocre unless you're looking for an electronic synth type of sound.

The FF is a crazy pedal but probably more useful on guitar than bass. All those crazy oscillations on the Zvex Demo would probably be frowned upon by bandmates. I personally love the gated pinched sound of the Woolly Mammoth (for a synthy tone), but alas it is not active friendly, and expensive.

I'm after an OLC Chunky Cheese which is a clone of the Lovetone Big Cheese for that gated sputtering sound.

On talk bass it seems rather underrated to me. But it's really one of those things where if you don't like it you absolutely hate it. I'm not sure I can say though that if you like it you love it.

I'll add another recommendation for the Mastotron. It's an awesome pedal.

To me the Mammoth always sounds quite nasal. It's a great pedal but it really only has one sound.

If you want a great gated, synthy fuzz, get Chunk's Brown Dog, or consider the Big John Hairy Balls.

I have a Mammoth and an Octavius Squeezer on my board and I use the Brown Dog circuit in the Squeezer more than I use the Mammoth. I'm even tempted to sell the Mammoth to be honest.

If only the Fuzz (BD of OS) had 1 or 2 more parameters...

Yeah it's not as flexible as the dedicated Brown Dog pedal - I think if you use fuzz a lot it's worth having the Brown Dog itself.

But at least the filter is WAY more versatile than the 00Funk (more flexible than anything, except maybe a Moog MP-201 + Moog MF-101 set-up), and that was much more important to me.

I couldn't get a useable sound from my Fuzz Factory, never tried a Wooly Mammoth, but absolutely love my Mastotron. If that says anything.

I'll second the idea that you should try to check out a Brown Dog. I love mine.
It's a tremendously versatile fuzz. I tried it along with the Zvex gated fuzz pedals and there was no contest.
the Zvex have prettier boxes, though.

I just got a Mammoth clone.

If you are tight on a budget...get the Mastotron before the Woolly Mammoth. They both can get the glitchy/gated/Devi Ever Bit Fuzz sound, but the Mastotron has more control.

I'm not sure if I will keep this clone. I might flip it tonight.

Well valerus, i did post in that sale thread and i want it bad

...But if that doesn't work out, daddy's gonna buy himself a new/used mastotron!

I tried the brown dog and loved it, but the price and size were turnoffs for me. im looking for an ubercompact horizontal pedal for that special spot at the foot of my board under the muff
