Which Fuzz To Get?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey dudes,

I'm clearing some space on my board (perhaps some stuff will be on the classifieds soon)
On the edge about keeping my VT deluxe, and currently, I have a broken RAT, and a Fulltone Catalyst as my fuzzes other than the VT.
I'm returning the catalyst, and getting rid of a pedal that rather takes up real estate. I'm going to get a new fuzz, preferably in the 100-180$ range, but I can't decide on which. Ones I've got in great consideration:
Grey Stache, Rat Tail, Supercollider, and Oxide.
My board consists of a few delays a comp and the ones mentioned above. If that makes a difference.
What fuzz would you recommend?

I haven't used the others you mention, but the Oxide is extremely versatile (everything from synthy-gated to brassmaster tones and lots inbetween) and sounds awesome.

What do you not like about the VT duluxe? Just curious. Have only seen some OK youtube videos. Seemed cool.

Like most of it, only found 2 settings I liked and would use. Tempted to trade it for a rusty box.

I tried the fuzz factory and it was a little dirty for my taste.

Looking for versatility and mostly, usability.

Versatility=Oxide!

Sorry, I'm a shameless endorser of that pedal because it really does sound great and I think is about as close as you can get to a jack of all trades fuzz in such a small form factor.

For versatility I think a pedal that can mimic the characteristics of two popular fuzz pedals would be your best bet. Do you have a favorite fuzz, though? Do you have a favorite fuzz tone?

If you prefer the muff-tone fuzz to everything else than that narrows it down to the Grey Stache and Supercollider, but opens you up to a world of other muff clones and variants.

If you prefer the gated, synthy characteristics of something like the Woolly Mammoth and the B:assmaster the Oxide may be for you.

Like they said - you wanna sustain for days and feedback, or do you wanna gated fuzz that stops when you do?
Do you want a fuzz with a clean blend?

Personally, I don't find a clean blend a necessity, but it is useful if you don't want a VT anymore, as you could mix in only a little fuzz to get an OD'ish kind of tone.

I have two fuzzes (or is it fuzzii?) on my board for those two very reasons.
Supercollider (modified to hell) and a Brassmaster (modded too..)
Another gated to consider is the Brown Dog.

Obviously the Oxide is advertised as getting both gated mammoth like tones as well as Brassmaster stuff, but I think it might be able to also get into some muff territory by setting the mid switch to scoop, and then playing with the blend & drive.

Along with the Stache, Rat Tail, Supercollider, and Oxide, I'd also check out Wren and Cuff's Pickle Pie, Tri Pie or Russian.

In reality, you won't go wrong with any of the above... they're all great pedals; you just need to pick the one that trips your trigger.

I am really liking the tone of that JHS Four Wheeler... Might have to order one

But now I'm torn between that and the Oxide

So I guess it's down to the Grey Stache or the Oxide this far.

Maybe samples of my band's music will help see what I want to do. Not looking for a lot, just want more color to basslines, and maybe more craziness to noise odysseys. Right now, I don't have to cut through the mix crazily well, since I'm the only melody. There's talk of adding a guitarist, so I'd like for it to cut through well.

Here's some dry samples recorded one afternoon. Two piece math and noise rock. Which do you think would suit the style better?
