FUZZ PEDAL HELP PLEASE

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello, so here is the deal. I play a fender jazz with active EMG p/j combo pick-ups. I am looking for a good fuzz, that will work and sound good with the active pick-ups, I have read how several fuzz pedals do not work well with active pick-ups, so I am looking for info that can help me find one that does. Or possably a overdrive....please recommend.

I use the EMG P/J set and I have never had an issue with any fuzz or distortion I've gone in to.

The Zvex Mastotron works very well with active pickups

What kind of sound are you trying to get? Any particular songs that you are trying to emulate the tone off?

There are so many fuzz pedals out there, and on this forum, there are several fuzz addicts who can help

The Mastotron is more of a 'synthy' aggresive fuzz.

Sounds like a Big Muff of some sorts might fit the bill. The Black Russian Big Muffs are nice and warm sounding and pop up on eBay and in the classifieds quite often.

There are loads of clones out there. I have the EHX Bass Big Muff and thought it was pretty good until I got a Fuzzrocious Grey Stache +

Hope that helps a bit

I have all active basses and if the effect has to much gain with it I just turn down the drive knob or gain knob since my pre-amp is 18v already. Just add the gain to taste and it shouldn't be a problem. With that said my Polish Hate sounds awesome with it as does the Red Lama clone I just built. The modded Bad Monkey was also excellent as well as my Fuzzrocious Momster.

For Weezer, the fuzz Matt used on Pinkerton was a Big Muff. For Alice in Chains, neither Inez nor Starr ever really used fuzz, just drive from their amps. For Rage, he used a Marshall Guv'nor, as well as another pedal that I don't think has been identified yet.

Sure, what bands did you want to know about? The 90s were my formative years, so I definitely digested as much as I could then.

Another one that was used a lot in the 90s was the Proco Rat and Turbo Rat. Novoselic from Nirvana used one on a few songs, Justin from Tool used the Turbo quite a bit.

The great majority of those songs aren't using any effects (other than some dirt from a tube amp). Here are a couple that are:

Sabotage - old vintage Univox SuperFuzz

Head Like a Hole - actually a synth, I've used the Behringer BSY-600 to cover it in the past

Both POTUSA songs - neither of them are strictly playing bass, actually both played on a guitar through guitar amps. Any sort of overdrive pedal would do.

Know Your Enemy - he kicks on a heavier drive at the end, either the Marshall Guvnor, or some other unknown overdrive pedal.

In the Meantime - I don't think he uses any effects on it at all, but I personally like to click on a subtle chorus during the verse to make the higher notes shimmer a bit. Really fun song to play on the bass.
