Do yourself a favor, and try the Frazz Dazzler from Dr. Scientist. I play a couple of muse songs using only this pedal, and it sounds pretty good (some would say Bonecrushing)

http://www.drscientist.ca/pedals/frazz

They only have sound clips on guitar, but it sounds awsome on bass, and the mix knob allows you to dial in your dry signal so you retain your low end

Cheap, cheerful & it works - Marshall Guv'nor II - has a 4 band EQ (deep, bass, mids, treble).

*Best* is totally relative you might love a tone i hate and visa versa

but at $900 i wouldnt like to take a risk, its not the kind of thing you could easily sell off afterwards.

Hi, I'd never been to Pete Cornish's website before. Wow, the custom boards he assembles are really something else indeed.

For the money, the Bass Big Muff is a great fuzz pedal. For a little bit more money, the Earthbound Audio Effects Supercollider is even better.

You also mentioned the Tube Screamer, which is more of an overdrive than a fuzz. It's lower gain, and more midrange-oriented. I really like my Digitech Bad Monkey, which is a variation on the Tube Screamer, but with bass and treble controls and it costs $50.

i really dig my English Muff'n. I like the tweakability inherent in its design. It can get insanely fuzzy with the right tube setup. Plus I love having more EQ options.
