Sweet!

Thank you very much, Ryan.

I just ordered a bunch of 2.8-3.5V green and 1.8-2.0V red LEDs. When they arrive, I'll try both and report. (I should get sockets, too, but it means more cash. Someday...)

We're about halfway through the life of this thread. Here's the list. PM me if you're not on it and should be, or if you have some Fuzzrocious goodness that needs to be added to your name. We won't remove prior owned pedals because you owned them once, you're justified to give opinion on your experiences with them. Cheers-

So its been about a month since I've been able to play through my main rig and I finally got a chance to today. Specifically excited about testing the RK at rehearsal levels and even bloody ear levels! HUGE range of sounds with my setup and was suprised at how responsive it is my playing (hard to get the full picture playing through a practice amp at home). The best investment I've made thus far minus my pbass!! Can't say enough good things about your pedals.

In addition to what you've got listed I've also got an etched Oh See Demon, heliotropic, and broke dick peanut gallery.

Thanks!

a rat tail is giving serious gas for my Stoner Rock Band. I've been using a Fulltone Bassdriver plus a VT lately and a Grey stache.

Welcome in. \m/

I like the industrial look of your gig spot. It's like you're in an old basement of an abandoned factory or something.

It's funny, but this autumn our friends from different bands built a gig house in an old basement of an abandoned factory & called it... "Gig House" But it looks more civilized than this place on video, I liked a hole carved in the wall for drum set - creepy s**t

Quick question for Ryan or anyone who can help. Im seriously considering the DemonKIng. Is it the same circuit as the OSD, or is there more gain? Reason I ask is, the demo video sounds pretty heavy. I dig it, but I wanna make sure that Ill be able to get my regular OSD tones with it.

Same circuit. Just has the gate/boost mod and feedback mod. Better configuration for doing cool s*** faster live!

Post BDPG upgraded modern and vintage caps

For a detailed account, see this Flickr gallery: BDPG upgraded modern and vintage caps

Here is a shorter version (believe it or not, the other one is longer):

My BDPG is my main preamp channel for bass guitar. I wanted it to have a lower noise floor and more headroom.

photo: the stock circuit

First I swapped in the generic transistors I had, but they were not usable. I was seeking lower gain, to better control of the onset of distortion. Though I don't want my BDPG ever to sound truly clean, I need it to have a bigger sweet spot at the edge of distortion.

Next, I swapped in uprated modern electrolytic capacitors. Compared to the stock ones, these were both better quality caps and had higher voltage ratings.

Lastly, I swapped in high voltage vintage capacitors. I did this because I owned them and because I could. Their cartoonishly large size and voltage ratings in the BDPG appealed to my sense of getting away with it and sense of the absurd. It also played to the BDPG's history: "Yeah I'm a geek, a freak... what about it?"

photo: the serious and the silly

The first useful stage of these mods was the modern electrolytic caps. Result? Lower noise floor! Woo-hoo! A slightly bigger and more relaxed sound, too, I think.

At this point, I believed that all the components were rated to easily handle a 12V or 18V power supply. So I tried 12V. It worked, but not as I wanted. Instead of more headroom, I got less. The BDPG became much more aggressive. It distorted easily, had a lovely glaring, ragged distortion texture, and sounded as if it wanted to pick a fight.

The last stage of these mods, the vintage caps, was also useful. I only monitored through my bass amp, so I can't say if these caps lowered the noise floor more. What they did do is make the BDPG's voice really sweet and spatial. A very nice treat.

photo: another view of new caps

The .68uF vintage cap had been tested at .702uF, shy of the 1uF cap it replaced by maybe enough to matter. It was enough. With my usual setting, my BDPG now made a bit less of its ultra-bass output. Not much, but enough for me to be unable to ignore the difference. I think I like the net result well, but will live with it for a while and see.

What's next?

An even lower noise floor is not necessary, but I think it's worth trying for. Swapping in metal film resistors should help (as they did in a vintage pedal upgrade I just finished).

Higher headroom is still my goal.

Until then, I have a BDPG that I like even more than I did at first, which was a lot. Since it is my main preamp channel for bass, that's pretty fantastic.

Best,

Snaxster

Snaxster,

I enjoy your Frankenstien pedal mods. Next one you do, can you give us a before and after comparison sound clips/video? As long as they are done on Fuzzrocious stuff.

Also, I'd like to hear your finished product OSD and BDPG if you can load some clips to soundcloud or something. Thanks,

Thank you, PFD!

Busted. It did occur to me that I should be posting demos on SoundCloud. Thanks for mentioning it! Give me some time to do it, but I will. I'm still waiting to get the LEDs for modding my OSD as Ryan suggested.

And of course, in this thread I will only post about my Fuzzrocious mods and such.

Best,

Snaxster

I just got a demon king and it sounds incredibly awesome for the most part But the feedback loop pot doesn't seem to do anything at all on any settings until it's almost maxed out (like past 3:00). Although it does light up the demon's eyes, which is pretty cool. And then at max, it decreases the volume a whole bunch. Is this normal?

Ry will have to answer that one, but his pedals sometimes behave differently between passive and active pups. What is your bass?

It's a passive bass.

Demon King sounds even better than I expected I still can't figure out the feedback pot though

Your feedback pot is working correctly. Nature of the circuit. Relax .

Try messing with the tone and drive knobs as well as your instrument's volume knob. Weird things happen depending on the spot on the feedback knob.
