a .. fuzzy question

Sign in to disble this ad

so .. i am still on my pedal conquests and ponder upon this FUZZ area. I know that I don't really need much Fuzz in my music (ever). Probably 5% or less than my overall playing, but I love it! I have to say I love the Little Big Muff VERY much .. and also the gritty T-rex Bass Juice or Zvex Woolly Mammoth. However, the Bass Juice and Woolly Mammoth costs pretty expensive and that brings me to a point, is it worthed to spend a few bills on a pedal I like, but I know for sure I won't use as much at all. What do you think? Should I just stick to a cheapie fuzz instead, than to collect a high-end fuzz pedal?

thanks!

I would say so. For the amount you use fuzz I highly doubt anyone would look down on you or anything for having a LBM. It's a super solid pedal. I would spend that money on something I would use alot.

Plus I think that high end fuzz pedals have a tendency of becoming addicting. It sounds to me like those who go on the search for the perfect high end fuzz are never satisfied. And while fuzz is a sweet effect I would rather be addicted to filters or something, there are too many fuzz pedals man, don't even risk it. Find one you like, it sounds like you enjoy the LBM, and stick with it. If you really want a high end fuzz, maybe look at something Skreddy makes (Mayo or Pink Flesh), they are like better muffs from what I have listened to and read.

I don't really think that there's anything wrong with a cheap fuzz... they're all just different flavors, and if the muff works for you, there's no need to go for a mammoth/etc as well. I'm actually going the other direction and waiting on a few parts to build myself a big muff clone to go with my wooley mammoth. I thought about an assmaster as well, and in the end went with the muff... so there's nothing saying that a cheap fuzz isn't as amazing as a pricey one.

If its just for fun then I'm not one to discourage GAS and more toys and I'd say go for it... I find fuzz/distortions addicting and love having some variety available.

As said Big Muff type Fuzzes are cool and work out fine. Now if you are after something over the top and don't want to break the bank [yet] look at the Guyatone TZ2 The Fuzz and possibly a older Boss Hyper Fuzz, bother are based on the Univox supperfuzz; the orange one.

The music you play might not require much fuzz. But what about when your just messing around on your own. Maybe you might use it a lot more than 5% of the time.

once you have to spend so much on it, and you dont need it, it becomes a toy

...but I love toys, I have several of them...

Only you know your financial situation Do you have spendable cash, or are you going to miss out on something else you really need because you left yourself short?

Thats all it comes down to really. I have plenty of gear that cost me heaps and rarely sees the light of day. Is it worth it? HELL YES! Its part of my hobby and I had the spare cash at the time.

Live a little, you might get hit by a bus tomorrow
