1) I'm a Fuzz addict, I've admitted it and have now started to 'collect' the damn things.
2) I have a bunch of fuzz pedals in the house that are 'unreviewed'
3) I'm working on a standardized method (and website) for evaluating these hairy beasts (and making that information available) and was hoping for some feedback on 'best practices'.
Current plan: - Come up with some standard test "lines"
- Record each line X number of times where X = Number of basses used * the Number of wildly variable settings.
- The "core" basses would be standardized. 1 P Bass, 1 Active Jazz Style, 1 Fretless (Piezo). The three core basses would always have the same strings and configuration. Baseline references would be available. The idea is that these basses are not being sold or modified after the 'project begins'
- Use a RadialDI to provide a solid DI signal and eliminate amp/cab differences.
- Do a quick video review using my favorite bass (currently my birdsong hy5) playing with settings and whatnot recorded via mic/amp/cab.
In theory I can apply this to any pedal I get, but in order to keep myself sane for now the focus would be bass & fuzz.
What am I missing?
Am I insane?

For example, some of them will also try to overdrive the preamp section of the amp. For the sake of being really through, you might wanna consider recording the samples both with an amp AND a DI/preamp |

I need to keep entertained in the process and double the work for ummm... questionable return will prove frustrating in the extended. Looking to achieve a balance of fun/information. Of course the video recording will be via an amp. |

It's going to take awhile to really get a critical mass of Fuzzes, figured I would start with what I had an just build out. |

I'll happily lend you my Neo, as long as I get it back |

I just posted the ones I had on hand, or had recently, and kept adding more over the years.
In retrospect I wish I had done the sort of organized reviews with few variables, and soundclips, as you are going to do and Basstasters has done. But it wasn't feasible for me, so my page will have to remain a collection of heavily biased and unscientific opinions. But I applaud your determination to "do it right"! |
