FX simulations - a bit for the experts

Sign in to disble this ad
For all you gentlemen who are in the know about how effects work, here's a naïve question.

Due to my recent university final project (which dealt with real-time software sound processing - basically, effects simulation) I've become interested in simulating various effect boxes.

Does anyone have any links on just how the effects work, DIY circuit schematics, amplitude/phase responses, block schematics or anything that would explain how some of the effects are made? So far, my project has an implemented hardknee, brick-wall-response compressor, an equally implemented expander, a crude form of distortion and distortion octaver, plus a ring modulator. I'm looking for some of the more exotic effects like phasers, flangers and such.

Any clues?

check out amazon for craig anderton's "electronic projects for musicians". A DIY manual from the early 80s / late 70's by the guitar player mag effects guru.

You may be able to google him and find some of the schematics online.

Also, some of the more esoteric books on effects have wiring diagrams and explinations of some of the more classic stomp boxes, especially for guys who need to fix them.

Just do a search on DIY, as we've had hundreds of threads on the subject. And did you change your mind about amp modeling, now you just want to model an effect?

No, actually, seeing as both can be modelled in similar ways (mostly via its input/output graph), I'm equally interested in amp and effect modelling.
