Hey guys I need a synthy gated fuzz to add to my rig.
I play electronica/drum'n'bass music.
It will go into this chain:
Boss OC2>(Fuzz here)>Mooger LPF>Bass Balls>Small Stone>Boss DD5
I know I love the Wooly Mammoth sound. I do not love the 300 plus price tag. (I think that is a bit over board honestly.)
I checked out the Devi Ever Bass Fuzz on BASSFUZZ.COM (Thanks GryGrx! Waiting for the WM review!) and it sounds pretty close to what I need, and the $135 price tag is
Soooo does anyone have experience with both.
How do the gates compare? Which has the most low end.
Preservation of the sub-bass sound is a must.
Gate that stops on a dime is best.
Synthier the better.
Am I overlooking another fuzz option? I am aware of the Brown Dog, but from what I have heard it do not preserve the low end nearly as well.
I guess if you can't beat the mammoth I will go with it, but damn that is a lot of doe.
Thanks. |

But that's coming from a poor college student. |

There's a Woolly Mammoth in the classifieds right now for $225, I'm pretty sure it's still there. I would say get the Woolly Mammoth because it sounds simply amazing with a Low Pass Filter and the expression pedal. |

seriously, though, the woolly mammoth is great, but not for everyone... some people don't like the way it responds after other pedals, buffers, etc... I love it, though... great pedal. there are probably plenty of gated fuzz pedals that would be cool. I know some people really dig that MXR pedal (blow torch?)
I want royalty payments for any pedal boards where the first three pedals are OC2 > Mammoth > Moog LPF....

I wish I'd bought a Brown Dog before the Octavius Squeezer came out, because now I'd feel like a mug buying the Brown Dog, but I don't want to spend a fortune on a Squeezer... |

| | Lookout! Here comes the Fuzz! Moderator | | Join Date: Dec 2003 Location: Columbia, MO | | | I've not done a direct compare on these two pedals, and while I'd like to say I can recall the distinct differences between the two from memory, I can't, and my WM is out on loan right now.
The couple of things I will say is that the WM gate situation is a lot more controllable / flexible than the DE bass fuzz because it is a distinct knob controlling the gate. The gate on the DE is part of the filter knob, so as you crank it up (getting more fuzzy) it becomes more gated. The gate is also much stronger/apparent in the right position of the intensity switch. Even then, artifacts will occasionally pass through if you aren't in tight control of your hands/bass, where you can get away with a lot more messy on the WM.
I would also say that I think the DE, when nearly cranked, is MORE synth-like than the WM. |

There are clips in the wiki if you want to hear it. It is very gated and synthy, and I cannot recommend it enough. Tremendous low-end, and it is also friendly to active basses, if that is a concern |
