Geddy Lee overdrive

I've just gotten into Rush, and I love Geddy Lee's sound. Does anyone know what kind of effects I could use to achieve a sound similar to this, especially around 0:42?

Thanks!

I put an Audere JZ-3 in my SX Geddy clone, and set the gain on the hi-Z mode fairly high for just that sort of overdriven sound.

...It's actually closer to Chris Squire's "Roundabout" tone, but close...

Get a sansamp or better yet, get the Behringer BD121 which sounds just as good and is a fraction of the price.

I think I read that Geddy Lee uses a Sansamp rack unit for distortion these days. Can't remember which one.

I enjoyed his tone much better in the 80s... today he's a little 'buzz saw' for me.

He uses a sansamp and a passive jazz. Pretty simple set up to match, keep in mind that his hands (attack and such) have a lot to do with the bite he gets.

Sansamp RPM.

Sweepable mids are delicious....

Yes, a lot of the bite in the tone is his attack, how precise his fingers are, etc. But he uses a Sansamp RPM, and a handful of other rack equipment into their PA system (use the search to find all the details.)

The video @42 seconds, sounds like he kicked in an octave effect, with the same OD he's running the whole time to me.

Ha! I havent been a newbie or poor and value hunting in 20 years! My Behringer works just fine for what its supposed to do and cost $30. For the occasional coloring its fine. I wouldnt use any effects all the time.

I've actually managed to get his tone pretty close. Honestly, i just run my passive jazz into a sansamp, with treble and high mid up at 6-7. I don't have to worry about it sounding not 'bassy' enough, because, whenever i'm with the band, turning it up gets you heard, and full sounding too. also, the way you wanna hit the strings are more like a hammer than a pluck.

My BDI121 works fine, but i'm still going to get a Sansamp or a VT bass when i've got the ca$h m0ney. This is most certainly to tide me over. I've noticed that the BDI's distortion is more muffly than the Sansamp's.
