Genesis "LAMB" fuzz tone?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking to acquire a fuzz that sounds like that used by Rutherford on "Lamb lies down" and "cage"...
I did a bit of research and came up rather empty...can anyone recommend a fuzz that fits the bill?
There are so many great pedals out there, and I haven't used a fuzz at all. I do have a Fulltone Mosfet BassDrive, but that doesn't really come near the sound I'm seeking.
Thanks!

Good question, that was a nice tone he got. I had sort of assumed it was a real tube amp or maybe a sansamp because it's so tight and solid.

Are you using a double neck Rickenbacker? I'm sure that had a great deal to do with the sound.

I'm really talking about the fuzz sound itself. Though the bass used does play a part, the fuzz type is very distinctive. From what I've read, it is listed as a "Marshall fuzz". Through the years they've produced several models though, so I'm trying to find out if someone has been able to nail the sound. I really don't care if it's the same pedal... a clone or different make would be fine.
For the record Rutherford did not play a Rickenbacker on Lamb. He used a Microfret 6-string bass.

I would also love to know. There has to be someone here who could at least give an educated guess.

Hiwatts are single channel, and VERY difficult to get dirt out of (I know... I've been playing them for 30 years), it's a fuzz pedal. Thanks

He may have used what Steve Hackett used, a Colorsound Supa Tone Bender, which is a Big Muff variant. A Barber Trifecta will probably get you the closest to that, as one of its settings is modeled on that fuzz.

I can get close with my Tech 21 SABDDI with Drive almost maxed, everything else near flat, and playing fairly aggressively near the neck on my fender jazz. He's either using a pick or digging in really hard whatever he's using I would think.

What an incredible bassline to an incredible song. I'll never understand how they managed to write that song. The way the vocal melody, the driving piano, and the odd bassline all fit together is just incredible.

OK, this is what Mike Rutherford used on the Lamb tour.

Guitar: Microfret Custom Double Neck, Twelve string (top),
Six string bass (Bottom)

Amps: Dual Acuostic (Bi Amped) One dry and one with effects.

Bass Pedals: Mr Bassman (Not Taurus)

Effects: Marshall Fuzz, Compressor (Unknown)

That's it!

Lamb Lies Down was released in 1974. I'm pretty sure that the SansAmp hadn't even been created yet...

The spelling is taken from the Genesis album "Foxtrot"

isn't it "Pythagoras with a looking glass reflects the full moon?"

in any case... i love all the Genesis albums with Peter Gabriel singing, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway is definitely one of my favorite tunes of theirs. genius!
