How do you decide which effects to buy. I voted as a combination of 2 and 3 |

Sometimes I follow the advice of others, but only if I trust their opinion. Sometimes not even then, as there are lots of people here in the FX forum whose opinions I trust, but whose tastes differ from mine.
I buy, try, and resell if I don't like it. If I buy used in the first place, I don't lose much money in the process. |

...and +1 to the ""Ask talkbass.com what the best <insert effect type here> in the world is and then buy that" option: people here have been greatly helpful as well and I've purchased both effects as well as other gear. Thanks for the thumbs-up on the Tech-21 XXL, everybody! |

But for those hard to find pedals (or the ones that the stores never like to keep around ) I have to go by what other people have already said about the pedals, get them in, and find out if I actually like them or not. Kind of a long and slightly annoying process. But definitely +1 to asking/looking for information here on TB. This place is awesome! |

Otherwise I read reviews, read TB, and order, hopefully with a return policy. Sure, I'm curios about what some of my favorite pro bass players use but that doesn't mean I'd like it or be able to afford it. |

I've bought a few things because other players use them, but I don;t do that solely based on trying to get their sound. If I hear a sound in my head, I'll think about how I can get that sound...and then go from there. If another player is already doing what I want to do, then that helps...

I then spend time on the interweb including TB listening to samples, reading reviews, and if I'm lucky I'll be able to find at least a couple of the high ranking contenders available for me to try out in town.
So, yeah. One at a time based on what area's most lacking. Internet reviews and samples weigh really heavily. |

I post here. Say what I want in the application, what I've done in the past and whiat I've like or dislike about it. Then I buy that pedal used (new if I have to in the case of the new BassDrive) and try it out. If I don't like it, I look for something else and when that comes, sell the pedal its replacing.

Haha.....Thats a good way to go about it. But what i've always done is just check harmony central for User reviews to get a good idea what people think about it. It helps guide me somewhat, I understand nothing replaces firsthand experience but at least it gives me some direction.
Then afterwards i trip balls on acid have hallucinations of pedals

| | | | I do as much research as I can and try everything I can. I mainly look at overdrives. I haven't found one that is "my" sound yet, but the more I try different pedals and the more I learn about them the closer I can get with what I have. |

Just sayin'... | Definitely. I know more about the posters at TB than the HC ones. I know what else they've endorsed, what their background is, what their experience levels are, etc.
Plus, everyone on HC with only a few exceptions is in a honeymoon period and swears by their selection. It seems you'll hear more balanced reviews here if you get enough responses. |

But Trust who you may.... I still question everyones Opinion
