Has anyone tried one of these? I'm interested in the green russian version, but wonder if it will REALLY sound like one, or if the green muffs were more to do with older components. Any input is appreciated
The differences between muffs result from changing resistor and cap values over the years but not really the type of component. No values in caps and carbon comp resistors can shift with time - but it's not as noticable as using say a part that had a 10% or worse tolerance and had it's value toward the more extreme value in shift. If you are looking for a "daimond in the rough green muff" tone - like how J Mascis swears that each on of his green muffs are different - then you aren't going to get it without getting one and testing each component inside -and even then it's a crap shoot.
On the other hand...
Order the kit and build it to green muff specs.
when it works you'll essentially have a stock Green Muff.
