GGG tuned Big Muff question (Bluebeard clip request)

Sign in to disble this ad
I just ordered two of the General Guitar Gadget Muff kits, in hopes to out fit my band with some custom tweaked muff doom.

Could someone either provide or direct me to clips of the Bluebeard fuzz (basically the GGG tuned Big muff).

I'm really interested to hear the Bluebeard with the tone control set fully counterclock wise and fully clock wise.

I'd really like to hear the bluebeard before I build it and compare it to my MuffBender circuit mods.

Thanks,

Michael

I've never heard the the modded muffs you're referencing, but I took a look at the ggg "tuned" version, and the tweaks are pretty minor compared to most muffs, so I doubt you'd hear a huge difference in the tone knob via an mp3 on the net. Maybe if you had them all side by side in front of you to compare, but if I was you I'd just build them and go from there.

I can tell you some muffs use 1uf instead of the .1ufs on others. Although .1 is pretty big, if you want the most lows (for a bass etc.) it doesn't hurt to use the 1ufs. Get non polars if you can. make sure you leave the .1s connected to the 2 sets of clipping diodes and lug #2 of the TONE pot. Don't change these to 1uf.

GGG also has a 100pf to gnd on the input. This will shave some frizz off the highs. If you like frizz, leave it out, if you think muffs are a bit harsh in the treble region, you may like it (or try both). The tone stack they have is a good place to start, so I'd leave that.

All in all it looks like it should be a good solid sounding circuit.

Wren,

a while back someon started a thread about modifying a NYC big muff to "Jombo Tonebender" specs - which basically removes a transistor stage and changes a few resistor and cap values. I took the idea further and used the duncan Amps Tone Stack Calculator and tweked my own tone control. Which in adition to a few key resistor changes around the tonestack I changed the high side cap to 4.7n and the low side I think I kept at .1 uf. It created an EQ sweep that is pretyy much full range centered around 1.2Khz and at about 75% it's nearly flat with a 2db soft dip at 1.2Khz - sounded great with 4 and 5 strings basses even with the tone turned all the way over to the treble side.

I think I may just build that pedal again since it worked before (but I sold it to a TBer to get the darn thing out to see the light of day.)

We verified the exclusive BlueBeard was nothing more than a GGG tuned muff from the builder himself.

Hutz - thanks for the clarification - I read the thread too. I'm really intrigued to hear the tone sweep of the Bluebeard (GGG tuned) muff

To me big muff's really come alive for bass when you start playing with the tone control sweep.

I've been wanting to hear some clips of the Bluebeard (GGG Tuned Muff) for a while as well. Almost bit the bullet and bought one from Sonny, but if I can get the kit for $65 or so, I think I will go that route.

Maybe TB member Zachass can chime in and let us know what he think of my tonestack in the Muff I modded. For a totally unbiased view

Wren,

here's the old thread where I full discuss my tonestack mod.

How-To: USA Big Muff to Colorsound Tone Bender conversion

It's the last post on the page
