Question Ghost Effects (and the proverbial Fuzz Face enigma)

Anybody use this dude's stuff? I searched, didn't find a dedicated thread.

Looks like he's built some Fuzz Face pedals modified for bass, which is why I'm so giddy about further research.

The guy - Ian - is a builder from UK and he makes pedals for guys from D*A*M forum (I think grygrx has order some pedals from him). I guess his bass pedals are mostly classic circuits with bigger caps. I've heard his Doombender which was Tone Bender Mk1 clone for bass and I almost bought it as it was so weird

I want to say I've actually heard of him because of his of Buzzaround clone (coolest vintage fuzz ever, in my opinion), but it was probably a while ago.

Needless to say, I shot him an email.

This is encouraging, but not from a financial standpoint.

Waiting to hear back right now, I also emailed Analog.Mike since I loved my Sun Face that I foolishly sold.

Ian has got very reasonable prices as far as I remember.

If you want fuzz face for bass better check Ox Bass Fuzz. Creepy Fingers can make you also one for bass.

I've looked at those briefly, perhaps I need to scope them out further.

Analog Mike says he can do a tone knob for the Sun Dial, which might work just dandy.

I'm starting to get a little Fuzz Face crazy it would seem. I think more people would as well if they weren't such picky little bitches (the circuit, not the plebes). Low end for days upon days!

The only fuzz face with tone knob I know of is Way Huge Foot Pig.

I guess Dunlop will reissue it at some point.

Mk1 is a vintage beast. It has very short sustain and it starts to sizzle and die very soon. Not for everybody for sure.

Returning to fuzz face, it was really a kind of illumination for me. I really wish that Ox Bass Fuzz will be ma main dirt box, except B:Ass of course.

So does the Woolly Mammoth if that counts. I say yes. It's not all about the Pinch knob! So will this Analog.man Sun Face I order, now just to decide between NKT-275 and BC-108. HMM.

Of course, the only thing I know about Tonebenders is that they are stupid huge.

I had both. I generally prefer silicon dirt boxes, but in case of Sun Faces I vote for NKT with both hands! NKT is more organic and dimensional.

Silicon sounds just like silicon No magic to me.

Cool, thanks. Sounds like me, every silicon fuzz I've tried I've liked, every germanium is ehh, excepting of course that lovely NKT-275. What a killer pedal. What an idiot I am for selling it.

I should note that I told the dude I sold it to "you're getting a GREAT fuzz" and he responded with "I know, I used to have one and I missed it."

I like the "clean" part, haha. Sounds great either way.

You should just order a fuzz face kit from ggg and make it with larger caps... that is exactly what I am doing right now.

^ When it comes to FF there really is some magic in NOS trannies.

I hope Ken will finish my Ox Fuzz soon. I've ordered one with NKT-274, on/off pot and led

If anyone wants one, pm me and I can build it to your specs from a ggg kit.

Here's a schem I (crudely) drew from one of the best bass FF's I've owned, the Tecamp Dream Buzz:

When it comes to FF, the guy from bass forum from my country built FF based fuzz that has two JFETs and one bipolar silicon transistor (whatever that means). This fuzz has also tone and symmetric knobs - the second one shapes the waveform. Bass samples I've heard were quite impressive. I should get one of these in two weeks, so maybe I'll post some samples then.

The Huckleberry is a Fuzz Face circuit with tone control.

The best Fuzz Face I've heard with bass is my modded version of the Axis Face circuit:

hey if you're still looking for a bass fuzz, try the Sonic VI Fuzz Unit -- it's basically a Jumbo Tonebender, so it's kinda muff-ish minus again stage and it lets a ton of low end through with some clean signal mixed in. He did a limited run but they pop up now and then and they're not really expensive. There's one on the dam forum now for $130.
