GK tone in a pedal?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just like the thread title says; is there a specific pedal that will get the GK tone?

For Ampeg tone there is the VT, and for the Eden tone there is the Eden DI, but I haven't heard any discussion about a GK pedal/DI.

Yeah that's for the distortion channel on the 2001 RB. Like the GK Preamp in a box? I don't think I've ever even heard of one at all.

Why not just buy a GK amp?

I may be a philistine, but what exactly is the GK tone? What/who are some examples?
A friend had a GK 15 years ago (I forget which model) but I didn't notice any specific flavour to it.

They're blowing them out for $100 on the GK site.

Think Guns and Roses, especially Appetite for Destruction.

Great question. I would, but my wife would kill me.

I'll have to check that out. Does anyone know about the build quality on these? Are they noisy?

Yes, this, but without the chorus.

The Diesel Dawg is simply put the distortion-channel of the 2001RB-head, so I don't think that'll do you any good. Unless, that is what you are after.

If you're looking for a pre-amp to simulate GK-heads, my best bet is to check out the MXR M80 Bass DI+. This one doesn't colour your sound much, but neither does GK-amps IMHO. They simply just amplify the sound that is being fed into it. Pure, clean power. Sterile, to some...

Also, the bass-sound on all (?) the Red Hot Chili Peppers-albums is the GK-sound.

I think the OP may have stumbled upon a new product idea.

Maybe someone should email Tech21 and GK?

They did sell 2001rb preamps for a while...not sure if those are still around? Granted it wasn't a pedal but...

To be fair the 400/800rb sound less specific to me. (yet I love my 400rb)

The 700/1001/2001rb have a more modern tone, to me at least. The word crisp comes to mind.

He used an Ampeg on some of Stadium Arcadium and he used Acoustic amps on I'm With You.

If you have an Apple "i" product you can use the PocketGK app to get a rather authentic GK emulation for $4.95 or free for a "Lite" version. http://pocketlabworks.com/pocketGK.html

There's always the MB200 as well. It's pretty bare bones, but the price is hard to beat. Especially when you can get 10% off at RMC.

What do you like about the GK tone? Aside from the Diesel Dawg distortion pedal, there's really no clear-cut GK-in-a-box. Maybe if we knew what ya liked about the sound we could recommend something close?

That's hard for me to describe. It just sits in a mix very well, and is very distinctive. I like to think of it like guitar amps in classic rock music--Fender vs Marshall. GK is like a Fender, Ampeg SVT like a Marshall. Both sound great, but in a very different way.

I'm not really wanting to buy a GK bass rig, I was just wondering if there is a GK variant of the VT bass pedal.

You are making me GAS for a GK active DI stompbox. Dang! I love how GK is nice and clean without being too thin and easy to dial in a nice tone with the 4 band. A stomp not unlike the SansAmp DI would be totally sweet.
