Gonna need some FX

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey All,

My new rig is on the way, (TCE RH450+cabs) and I'll be parking the ol' faithful, Roland Basscube(for now), which has some nice built-in effects that i'm gonna miss.

Chorus-Flange-Octaver and T-wah

What would you recommend >> chorus and flange are a must... the other 2 are a bonus. Would prefer to, not have to bend down to tweak dials to switch between fx(stomper with 2 or more switches or pedals would be ideal )

The 'Eventide Mod Factor' caught my eye... but quite expensive for what I'm looking for(around $400 on ebay).

btw... I spent the last hour or so going through the fx reviews pages... [head still spinning] ...so any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thanks for replies!!!

KJ

Boss and Roland are the same company, so the effects are probably pretty similar. Also, Boss pedals are pretty common on the used market, therefore pretty affordable.

Yes, I've tried a few Boss pedals in the past. No complaints there.

I'm really not familiar with any other brands, but am interested in any that are highly recommended.

It's not so much the brand, but the effects(chorus, flange, etc) that interests me.... and it would be ideal to find a box with these two effects in one.

The Boss GT-10B multi-fx unit looks very interesting, but may be a bit much for my needs at this time.

What's your budget? The Boss pedals are affordable, but the sky is the limit. If you haven't, I'd suggest trying single analog pedals. The pairs of effects you can get in analog pedals are chorus/flange, but the flangers on dual function chorus/flangers aren't usually the best, and you could get octave/filter from certain synths, but those would probably have a lot more stuff than you'd need.

My picks would be:

Chorus - Analogman Mini Chorus (Deep Mod)
Flanger - HBE Frostbite
Octaver - MXR Bass Octave Deluxe
Envelope Filter - EHX Micro Q Tron

I'd recommend a CE-5 and a BF-2 for chorus and flanger.
Both are inexpensive, holds lows very well and gets the job done in a compact and durable package.

For octaves, have a look at EBS OctaBass, Boss OC-2 or MXR BOD.

If you want a really good octave that can do both above and below, look at the Electro Harmonix Micro POG. It is a bit pricey, but it apparantly very good

Thanks for all the replies... got some research to do now.

Mark -- I was thinking around $200 for maybe chorus and flange.

...Although I'm really diggin' octaver, and some wahs... I don't think I can budget for the Boss GT-10B at this time, as I just dropped a load on a new RH450 w/cabs, and a new Dingwall bass.

Maybe I can find some of these recommended, 'used'. I'll keep a look out

[edit - just watched a few youtube vids on the MXR M288 Bass Octave Deluxe ... I'm pretty sure I gotta have one now!
...also checked out several GT-10B vids, and it seems to appeal more to the "hey, look at the cool space movie sounds I can make with this gadget" crowd. For some reason it reminds me of an xbox. I was really looking for someone to do an in depth demo of the standard effects... oh well.. I'm leaning to the single pedals anyways]
