Compressor Reviews Accurate reviews of a ton of units. The Diamond bass compressor works for me. The ovnilab review describes to a tee what thing does.

You can't really say it enough though. Bongo's database is a SERIOUS resource.

Too many choices to list. If you're looking for clean, transparent bass compression in a pedal format, the "big three" seem to be:

Demeter Opto Compulator
EBS Multi-Comp
Trace-Elliot SMX Dual Compressor

Other popular choices include a bunch of Ross clones: the Maxon CP-9 Pro+; the 4-knob version of the Keely; the MXR Dyna Comp; etc.

One of the newer choices that seems to get good reviews is the FEA Opti-FET. FEA also makes an SMX clone that's supposed to be nice.

For detailed reviews of a huge variety of compressors, check out Bongo's Compressor Reviews.

I love my OptiFET.

That said,...the OPs question is a little too vague to answer outright and definitively. Get a sound that you are looking for in your mind, then set a budget, then consult Bongo's resource.

I'm probably in the same boat. I've used a CS-3 before without completely appreciating what a compressor is (and I still don't). My whole setup changed due to relocating out of country. Now, I'm planning on going back to exploring compressors again. I've come to the conclusion that I don't absolutely need one. But I'd like to explore. After reading a good deal of Bongo's reviews and other research, my ideas were to get either of these:

1) BBE Optostomp
2) Biyang CO-8
3) DOD Milkbox

I owned an SMX too for a while and I was also disapointed. The sound was ok, noiseless and transparent but I was under the impression that my sound was a bit dull with it turned on... plus I kept blowing off the input transistor when I used it with my G&L...

Seymour Duncan Double Back is another good one. I love the option to bring back some uncompressed treble or mids for that extra bite.

Personally, I have found the Demeter Opto Compulator to be very easy-to-use, and it can sound quite transparent IMO.

I use a MarkBass Compressore. Because it is a 12 Volt, and a tube compressor, it requires a lot of power, but velcroing its power supply under my board next to the VoodooLabs PP2 is worth the hastle. Great sound, and you have control over the Gain, Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Release, and Output Volume. Very happy with it.
