Check out Distortion Felix...every song is a lesson in tasteful fuzz usage.
There's a long list of fuzz songs, here are some bands to check out:

These Arms Are Snakes
Melvins
Russian Circles
Godflesh
Man is the Bastard
lots of Nine Inch Nails tunes
Anything off of Ministry's "Filth Pig" (devastating fuzz tone!)

The cavalry should be coming in soon to help out.

One of the very first recordings with "fuzz bass", was "The Word" from the Beatles Rubber Soul album, 1966. It still sounds fantastic to this day.

DAMN - SOMEONE GOT THERE BEFORE ME!

...think it was THE first distorted bass by anyone on record wasn't it? if you listen to it - the bass is actually double-tracked...the "fuzz guitar" is actually bass - you can tell its bass when it starts going really low! - if I'm wrong on that please can someone direct me to the "first distorted bass on record"?

"Mean Mr Mustard" off Abbey Road
"Smile Away" off wings "Ram" Album
Motorhead stuff
Quite a bit on B.R.M.C's first couple of albums...
Joy Division live recordings theres some nice drive (ok its not fuzz, but...)

"Dance to the Music" by Sly and the Family Stone (with Larry Graham on bass) is another very early song with fuzz bass.

Might never use a fuzzbox, but he's certainly fuzzing it up.

Check out OM, Sleep, Electric Wizard, Orange Goblin...

Just search up the Bonekrushing thread in Misc.

I always thought it was strange that when it was Larry's turn to "add some bottom," he used a fuzz that had very little bottom to it.

I'd recommend Lightning Bolt or Big Business for some directly-in-your-face fuzzy bass.

Frank Zappa - Apostrophe'
Acid Bath - The Blue

Two of my favourite fuzz'd/dirt'd/whatever'd basslines.

Young Widows is my end-all be-all for bass fuzz tone, especially on their newest album Old Wounds.

Not sure what Kind of music you are into but Robert Sledge of Ben Fold Five did some great fuzz bass lines on songs like Army and Kate.
