I use a Stingray bass and a Hartke LH500 head and HX410 Cab. I have a pedal board with 5 pedals on it and get a significant amount of noise when running my bass through the board into the head. I'm not a fan of the effects loop for my effects. I need a good gate/noise reducer to put between my board and the head to cut out all (or at least most) of the noise. Could be either a pedal or rack-mountable, but I guess pedal would be preferred. Looking for something under $150. Anyone know anything good?

The only good solution is to figure out where the noise is coming from, and eliminate it. Sometimes the noise is caused by bad or incorrect wiring. Sometimes it's a piece of gear that is just plain noisy, end of story. Sometimes it's from one piece of gear being incompatible with another. Sometimes it is from unwise EQ settings.
You will have to experiment, use the process of elimination, to figure out where the noise is coming from--and eliminate it. |

Sometimes it's a piece of gear that is just plain noisy | Well I went through systematically and ran through each of my pedals (bass -> pedal -> amp) and found that generally each one added a little bit of noise but it's when it's all combined that the noise is really noticeable. The amp itself makes some noise but by itself that's not too bad. I also ran things through different instruments and different amps and it's always the case that adding the pedal board adds a tremendous amount of noise.

Cancelled out hiss from my Ric's single coils and hollowbody's hum with muffs. |

Bongo did forget to mention that low quality power supplies are old/poor building wiring can cause noise issues.
IME the only thing gates are good for are preventing bleed through on drum mics.
The thing is with the way gates and noise suppressors work the noise is still there when you are playing (and most likely can't hear it anyway) and they only clamp down when you aren't playing which is like more of a bandaid (frankly a waste of money and board space) situation than anything else to me. |

What made me really consider getting one was when I was playing with my envelope filter pedal. Had it at a quick downward filter setting (like a synth bass sound) and having the hiss come through after every hit sounded horrible to me.
