Maybe an EQ pedal is in order, particularly a parametric.

PS: EHX's Steel Leather purports to do what you're after.

I kinda agree with Feral Feline... To really make pick playing pop out, I just turn the treble down on my bass and boost the bass a little and play a bit harder. A light overdrive (to mimic natural overdrive of a tube amp) might also help

What gear are you using?

Boost some mids around 400K, downstrokes, , roundwounds and a slight volume boost is what I use whenever picking and it works like a charm!

A low gain overdrive will add a nice grind to the pick attack. The VT Bass sounds particularly good when playing with a pick!

Boss odb-3 overdrive sounds great with a pick high or low gain.

Not to nitpick but I assume you mean 400hz, as 400Khz is waaaaay outside of human hearing.

I personally like boosting a little higher than that, usually around 1K. I don't use a pick but have a fairly percussive finger attack.

I agree, I usually settle around 800 for string definition.

I would say bright strings, play near the bridge, maybe a light over drive, like a vt bass. Eq pedal set with an upside down smiley.just mess around a bit with an eq pedal.

Btw, dont get the boss odb3. Its fizzy, and not gritty

This might be a case in which the VT Bass or other tube emulator would be pretty useful.

That or drop some coin (and sore back muscles) on a Tube amp.

That depends on what kind of picking sound you want. usually the most common picking effects are compressors, limiters, and overdrive pedals. preamp pedals(tube-emulated or non tube-emulated) is another common picking effect. if you want a picking effect that adds more punch, an exciter pedal would be right your alley.

Just boost your mids a little and get on with it.

My favorite way to make picking sound awesome is to play right in front of the neck pickup with action low enough to get a consistent "click" of the strings hitting the fretboard (fret click, not fret buzz), a la slap bass. No effect can replicate that.

But maybe it's not what you're after.
