Got me an Aphex Bass Xciter... question please

This music store where I do business had one, brand new in package, that they got from another store going out of business. Price? $39.99

But they had no A/C adapter for it (the adapter doesn't come with it) and say they can't order the exact one for it, because they are not normally Aphex dealers.

However, the owner's manual says that virtually any A/C adapter will work, either pos or neg center pin, just as long as the plug physically fits the socket (huh? How in the world can they build this unit so any adapter will work with it?). In the store we used a Behringer adapter so I could test drive the box. Worked fine for the few minutes I was messing with it.

Do you think it would be OK to continue to use the Behringer cord (I already own one of these), or would you find a place to buy the correct Aphex adapter.

Thanks

Yeah, like the manual says, pretty much any power source works. Almost all "normal" effects pedals use the same BOSS-style adaptor.

Since you still HAVE yours, do you think you could answer a quick question for ME?

Will the Bass Xciter actually take 18V power? I lost my manual, and the underside of mine is covered with velcro.

They built a circuit which only allows the power to flow in a certain path, so that if for example the plug inserted is the wrong polarity, the "hot" will be blocked from proceeding in a direct line, and will be redirected around to the correct path. Same goes for ground. Electricity follows the path of least resistance, so it is relatively easy to "make it" go one direction or another around a mouse maze.

Not sure what you mean exactly by taking 18 volts, but the manual says, under "Specifications" that the external power is 5-12 VAC and 7-17 VDC. I see nothing about 18V.

If that doesn't answer your question, ask again.

Thank you for explaining that Bongo.

You're welcome.

Wow. The manual also says that a fresh alkaline battery should last 100-150 hours of continuous use. If true, this would be one stomp box that you wouldn't really need an adapter for.

Yeah, but if you're like me and you have it on a pedalboard with a cable constantly plugged into it, you'll still run the battery down in less than a week.

What? No "Great deal, man!"

I can't believe I got this pedal for $40. I used it on a gig last night and I really liked my tone. Another bassist looked at my Peavey Max 700 head and commented on how nice it was. It did sound nice, but the Aphex stomp box helped. I love this thing.
