Got ~ $300 to spend on effects

Sign in to disble this ad
I've just got about $300 for my birthday and have decided to use it to venture into effects. I like the idea of stomp boxes being able to turn each one on and off individually and the ability to run more than one at once but I don't know exactly which sounds I want so I am looking at multi effects/amp modelling in particular the Behringer V-Amp and adding the footcontroller to it and also the Line 6 Bass Floor Pod.

What I would like to know is which one has the better effects, how easy the effects are to edit and also how easy it is to switch effects mid song.

Please make any other suggecstions if you have them.

Thanks

Ben

cheap, good reviews, nice solid mtal as opposed to the pods plastic, foot pedals it has and most models have an expression/ wah pedal, still pretty basic though

i am going to get it for my fx system

Ah cheers for that. I'd forgotten about Korg. Might look at the AX3000B. Anyone know where you can buy it online?

I would suggest taking a look at the Boss GT-6B. While it doesn't have as extensive amp/cab modeling as other multi-effects units out there, it has pretty solid effects. That and it is built like a tank.

Here's what suks, imo. You get (any brand) multi fx unit, play around, and discover what 3 or 4 or 5 fx you really like. Too late, you've already spent all your $$ on the multi. Single fx units are inherintly better sounding, and have more range of control, generally, than ANY multi fx box, thus, are the better deal. What would be nice, would be to have the multi for a week or two, see what's interesting, then dump it and buy a few single fx boxes. Now, let's see, how could you do that.....? That's just my thought, alot of people are plenty happy with multi fx boxes, the guitar player in my band, for one.

Thats what I'm worrying. I'm from the UK and I don't see much apart from Boss, Digitech and Behringer around here. My folks are visiting Florida in a few weeks and said if I want anything I could order it to where they're staying so I;m not going to be able to try hardly anything out. Might just browse the forums, listen to some samples and go from there. Cheers for the advice.

I second this recommendation. The Korg is my favorite muti unit if the price range is under $1000. Its a steal for $200.

+1

A multi is cool for figuring out what you like, and IMHO, stomp boxes are far better sounding, with much more versatility than any multi unit. I'd recommend a cheap (used) multi (Zoom multi was my first pedal) and then buy what you like with the $300. And what's wrong with the Boss or Digitech lines anyway?

The thing with single effects that has never worked for me is programming- you can't save patches on nearly any of the units out there. On a multieffects or a rack multi with a MIDI controller, you can quickly switch between multiple settings of the same effect or just many different effects and combinations of them while still playing.

Certain effects don't tend to have a good equivalent in a multieffects format though, such as envelope filters, so I can see myself picking up an individual of those.

Do you have a Guitar Center or other giant evil guitar store that has a 30 Day Money-back guarantee? If so, you could pick up one of the multis, figure out what you like and dislike then return it if you only want a couple of the effect types, keep it if you're happy.

The power of multis is in the writing your own settings and being able to switch between them quickly live. You can have radically different tones with the press of a button and if you know your stuff (EQing, compression, etc), they can sound quite good. Also, never trust the presets on multi units, they tend to be awful.

That said, the multi is going to be far cheaper than assembling a big board if you don't really want to get into it. Unless all you end up wanting is one or two effects, money-wise you're best off with the multi. If you want to get into it, and are willing to spend money over a long period of time, single pedals are definitely worth it in terms of sounds and the satisfaction of really creating your own sound.

Oh, and most effects in a multi are modeled after famous effects/amps like the EHX Big Muff Pi, a Jet Phase or a Marshall Cabinet. These will likely have names that are puns of the original, so it's pretty easy to figure out and if you like the sound, you could get the original if you return the multi.

Anyway, good luck. (+1 to the GT-6B)
