Great fuzz with a Fuzzrocious Rat Tail

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello y'all,

I'm looking for a fuzz that would be great with a Fuzzrocious Rat Tail. I'm looking for something that sounds different from the Rat Tail.

Any recommendations?

thanks,

Richie

I'm using a swollen pickle atm with the RT. It gets some good tones, and both are blended with clean. But I'm considering a Grey Stache, and have a Woolly Mammoth clone coming. So I'm still trying different things. I reckon the Rat Tail would make almost any fuzz sound
that much awesomeR

I like the Swollen Pickle too. That thing kills man! I had a Mastotron before but sold it.

Yeah I like mine, but just keen to try some other fuzz. Won't be selling it or nothing. Have you got your RT? My favourite pedal for sure.

I've owned both at the same time. Both are great fuzzes but the Grey Stache trumps all. I love the versatility of the diode selector and especially the mids knob.

Another +1 for Grey Stache with the diode selector. In my eyes it is the perfect Big Muff.

But if you're more of a Brassmaster / Tubescreamer / Wooly Mammoth / etc. type guy, you may not like it. If you've ever liked Muffs, it'll be your Holy Grail.

James - what would you say the differences are?
I have a Grey Stache and it's one of my top three fuzz. I also have many other types of fuzz pedals ranging from muffs to Woolly Mammoth/Bassmaster... and I've been trying to assess wether I need this pedal.

I have tested turbo rats in the past and found they cut too much bass and sounded overly aggressive but I sense this pedal might be different.

Thanks for your thoughts on this one. I always enjoy reading your posts.

Thanks Laurent. I've gone through quite a few muff-variants and the Grey Stache won, I'm done with trying other muff circuits. Personally, I've found it to be the perfect fuzz because of, again, the diode switch, mids knob, and oscillation. The PPB and the GS both have a very similar sound due to them being muff-based. I did appreciate how the PPB has a blend knob. I liked it in the sense that I could run an overdrive into it and get a nice blended fuzz/overdrive tone. I also liked how I could set the fuzz to a brighter tone and use the blend to hold up the low end. The GS has no blend knob but that wasn't an issue for me. I really liked how I could switch from a traditional Si based muff for more stoner/doom tones to an aggressive tone (no diodes) and a really nice brash tone using the LED diodes. You never get lost in the mix with the mids knob (megapraise for this feature) and the momentary oscillation is great for making some f*cked up noises =] Compared to the other muffs I've tried they all felt kind of boring, not that they sounded bad, but boring...I found 1-2 useful setting and then "meh". I've also owned a turbo and it did cut a lot of bass and with higher distortion settings (in the fuzz territory) everything seemed to blend together (Rat Tail is the way to go here). Regarding the Woolly Mammoth and similar fuzzes I've never been a fan of the synthy tone but having a variety is nice.

Sorry for the rant, this is just my opinion. I say keep the GS, everyone should have one. If you can cop similar tones with it then sell the others.

Cheers,
James

Not a rent at all. In fact very interesting.

Also what are your thoughts on the rat tail? How does it differ from other fuzz pedals?

I love the Rat Tail. There are four pedals that I'll own forever; GS, RT, BJFE BBBOD, and a Dredge Tone Angler. Those four cover all of my needs for dirt. If someone is looking to buy a Rat/Rat clone, they really shouldn't waste their time and money on traditional Rats...they're only useful after you mod them or if paired with an eq. The RT is great for just about everything. I use it for a more distorted/crunchy fuzz tone (think Russian Circles' "309"). The fuzz tones you can get out of it are fairly interesting. It's quite versatile given the diode selector (Ge Mosfet, no diodes, LED) and the "1 & 2" knobs. The mods that Ryan has done make the fuzz useful and not muddy. Notes are articulate, defined, and don't lose low end. The Ge diodes are beefy, no diodes is more aggressive, and LED is again brash. Each have their own charm to them. I like the "1 & 2" knobs, they let you shape your tone rather than just filtering it. Between the GS and RT I'm happy with the variety of fuzz tones I can get. I may end up selling my Tonebender because I can reproduce similar tones but it's nice to have something at the end of my chain to feed everything into. Although I'm set for fuzz I'd still like to try the Viva Analog Standalone 360 Fuzz and if Darkglass every comes out with a fuzz, that for sure.

Here are my current RT settings:
No diodes, V - noon, F - 1, D - 11, 1 @ 3:00, 2 - maxed

Tri Pie '70 sounds great on bass. I've put up a couple of clips running it into a Rusty Box elsewhere.

At one point I owned a Tri Pie 70. I liked it better than the Box of War but less than the Tall Font Russian. The Tri Pie 70 sounds pretty close to the EH Bass Muff Fuzz IMHO. I had a chance to AB them and the Tri Pie won but not by much. Considering the price difference the EH is a better value.

Played with a Barnacle Bazz Fuzz, a Fulltone Octafuzz (in the Fuzz position), an Swollen Pickle, a stomp under foot Civil War, and a Fender Sub Lime today. It was facinating to note how different all the fuzzes are. In some setting the Barnacle sounded a bit like the Octafuzz - that really articulated version of fuzz. The Swollen Pickle is scary so much gain, so much bass nothing sounds like this pedal. The Fender Sub Lime is really very good. That pedals grows on you, it's kind of understated but it hits all the right spots. The SUF Civil War is just plain great all Muff and crunch.

Why are my ears ringing?
