Green Ringer mods for Bass - I need feedback

Sign in to disble this ad
So I have not built this pedal yet - so still no clips.

However, I put a PM into Joe P who weighed in considerably in the last Green Ringer thread.

But here are my proposed mods to the circuit (or possible areas to mod.

First the link to the schematic

http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/pdf/ggg_gro_sc.pdf

since the circuit is VERY basic - I went through an tested the corner frequencies on all the RC filters. I've narrowed it down to two possible areas where the "low end" loss seems to be happening.

C2 and C3 or C5.

The input cap interestingly enough seems to allow quite a bit of bass in cornering at 30hz or so - so I'm lead to belive that the bass sucking in this design stems from the divider or the output cap. - I'm not keen on changing the resistors off the drains for the transistor because that could adversly affect the bias.

I don't know if I can change C2 and C3 without changing the nature of the octave because on one side of the filter (the side that precedes the 10K resistor to the ground) the corner frequency is 338.8hz But on the other side (the side that preceds the 68K and 22K resistors to the ground) the corner frequency is 37.6 hz) I'm afraid if I try to lower the 338.8, I'll lower the 37.6hz side too low and negatively affect the circuit. If I were to change this value - I'd use a .47 or .33 cap on both sides.

The better option looks to be with C5. If i change it to 0.33mf cap it should drop the corner frequency on the 10K resistor side to 48hz which is more than enough.

if you had to pick a place in the circuit to positively affect the low end response without changing the overall character of the effect, where would it be?
Am I on the right track with the stated mods? If so whihc one will take me in the right direction?

Thanks your help here is greatly appreciated.

I hope Joe P gets back to me soon - but in the meantime - I open this up to anyone.

Take a crack at it!

I already know of a few people that would be very interested in a bass specific Green Ringer.

thanks,

Michael

Yeah, I'd jump right on board and build one for myself if the mods work out well. The low-end rolloff was my ONLY complaint about the Green Ringer, and the non-phase-inverting blender I had at the time did not help.

If I didn't have so many projects backlogged already I'd build one and test the mods just to help out. But I'm a bit overwhelmed these days.

I am in the process of building one of these. Anyone convinced of the appropriate mods yet to the GGG design to make it bass specific? THANKS!

My first suggestion would be to put it on a breadboard and swap out components easily, rather than try to diagnose it via schematic. Get you a cheap Radio Shack breadboard, and mock it up first. I actually solder leads to jacks, pots, everything and mock it up on a breadboard first.

For starters, I would go with at least a .47uf Input and a 1uf output. Regarding C2 and C3, whetever you do, keep them the same value. I think your calculation on filter frequency there is flawed. You are taking resistor values from the input side of an RC filter, not the output side. Output is taken from between the cap and resistor, not before the cap. R11 is controlling gain on Q3, and R6 is biasing Q2. C4 looks like a filtering cap to me, and should not make much difference on the capacitance in that circuit because the value is so large.

Just looking at it though, I don't see anywhere you can make it really more bass friendly, but I'm no guru. My best suggestion would be to build a small blend circuit like the B. Blender, and throw it in the same enclosure.

Note however that the output of the GR circuit includes the majority of the dry signal already, so blending results in unwanted peaks and dips. It sounded bad to me blended. A phase inverter or a crossover may help.

I think I'm going to build one of these pretty soon, so let us know what you find out. Its great to have you guys thinking of ways to tweak these pedals for the low end.

P.S.: found this thread at diystompboxes, it may be of some help. http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforu...?topic=65654.0
