Green Screamer or DS-1 Mod

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey fellas

I'm caught between an $80 Penny Pedals DS-1 Bass Mod or a $30 used BBE Green Screamer. Just looking for a mild overdrive to add a bit of grit.
I could get the BBE today and maybe talk the guys at Music-Go-Round down to about $25 or so (it was painted black). With the Penny Pedals, I would have to get added to a wait list
Wait a bit, or get one today?
Which one should I go for?

GO!

look around for a badder bass monkey, which is a great bass OD. neither the modded DS-1 nor the green screamer is a good choice for "a bit of grit"

Then it doesn't really matter which one you get because they are both mediocre OD pedals.

get a HBE Hematoma used for a bit over $100........its got a gain/boost side and a distortion that can go light to full blown over the top

I use a Boss SD1 Super Overdrive for my soft overdrive, it also works great to push the other fuzz pedals into frenzy mode.
The DS1 is not a bad pedal just sucks for bass and is a bit too harsh for a soft OD sound.

As for the Penny Lane....good luck, I emailed them twice and never got a response. I'm ok with that as I'm happy with what I ended up with. But the Youtube clips did sound good.

The BBE Green Screamer is just another TS-808 clone (and not a highly regarded one at that, which is maybe why its discontinued ) and a traditional Tube Screamer circuit will rob low end..that said a lot of bassists like them....although a good bunch who do also have modded ones that retain the low end better.

You can get a used Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive for $80 at least once a week on ebay and thats a TS circuit with better low end retention....a good mild OD pedal that is at least mediocre if not very good.

+1 for the sparkle drive and the bad monkey. both are better TS variants than the BBE. the penny pedals ds-1 is awesome, but not so much for the mild OD sound.
