I'm looking for a high quality bass overdrive or muff pedal. I'v narrowed it down to these two. I'm looking for a death from above kinda tone, which would you guys recommend? anybody have both and can compare at all? Just looking for opinions. Thanks tb. |

From doing similar research, I would say you'd get a closer tone from the Grey Stache rather than the TAFM. While I dont have first hand experience with the TAFM(unless anyone is looking to sell one?) the review on bassfuzz.com gave me the impression that TAFM has more of a synth-ish fuzz and not quite the aggressive feel you'd find in DFA's tone. |

rratajski, if I may ask, are you not the man who builds the grey stache? If so would you mind if I pm'd you some questions? |

I actually found that out from talkbass not to long ago, about the amp distortion. It's crazy stuff! I wish I had the coin to swap out 20 overdriven speakers every time they blow! And if I had that cash I'd probably be buying both pedals. Alas, I can dream, but my bank statements keep waking me up...
I checked out bassfuzz.com, great site. I actually found the link that led me to TAFM on fuzzrociouspedals.com and that's how I came to consider the tafm in the first place. I then checked bassfuzz.com and their review locked it down between the two. |

I still have the TAFM, but sold the Grey Stache. That by nooooo means should be interpreted that one is better than the other, it was an 'application based' decision where the TAFM was more the sound I was after for the project Im in.
sooooo.
Lets start with the TAFM. It can be 'synthy', which is a bad thing usually to me in my fuzz search cos that normally denotes overly square wavey with some fizz or splat and I dont go for that, BUT with the trim pots inside you can change that quite nicely. I found it very versatile with the Clean Volumes and Fuzz Volume knobs as well as the Shape knob. There are alot of good tones and they are all usable.. you can get some good cut, or good thick compressed fuzz that still has some fundamental. A true contender.
now the Grey Stache. Im a Fuzzrocious fan, and try out many any pedal I can get the chance to. I ordered a Stache and a DD. Kept the DD, sold the Stache. I found the Stache to have a nice versatility while still keeping in the range of its one voice, so to speak. Its a very useful fuzz tone that is dynamic and has alot of presence. That was actually the part that didnt work for me for what I was looking for. The Stache has the Mids knob to address the Mid-Suck that alot of fuzzes suffer from and honestly, I didnt think it needed it as I was actually always turning the Mids knob all the way down. I like to keep my mids and lows in a fuzz, but I play a Stingray and found that thru the Stache it had to much mids for my tastes in our project. With other basses that arent soo mid-voiced this would be a real plus...
so basically try either one.. Ive gone thru dozens of fuzzes and both are top tier. If you dont like the one you buy first you can always get almost all to all of you money back thru the classifieds and buy the other.. OR you may find someone with the other pedal to straight up trade ya!!
good luck with the newly developing fuzz addiction!

I owned a jack casady hollowjawn for a bit.
Hollowbodies HATE muffs............so unless you have a noise suppressor, skip the stache. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
