I bought one of these this week. I spent a lengthy bit of time with it today, and I am extremely happy with it. It's the best envelope filter I've ever played.

Probably the smoothest envelope around. Very sexy sounding

+1 on the GR - absolutely great pedal, it never doesn't fit in sweetly IME.

I've got a ZVex Mastotron in mine and it works great for a nice blended fuzz wah.

What's anyone else putting in their FX loop?

I've been on the fence about the Groove Regulator. Is there any volume drop-off when you turn it on?

For me, it's either the Groove Regulator (very versatile with easy controls) or the new MXR M82 (the exact envelope filter sound I love, plus a clean blend to keep it in the mix). I was just curious if the GR kept the output around the same level in a live setting.

Now that is a tough decision, lol. Both are very signal friendly as far as not altering the volume too much but they really are very different. The GR is thicker smoother and a generally more subtle pedal while the M82 is wetter, wilder (though not Agent 00Funk or Q-tron wild) and more in your face. The GR doesn't mess with your input volume much at all and the M82 allows you to control how present both are coming out of the pedal. The GR also has up/down sweep options and hi/lo options for a little bit more tonal versatility vs. the M82. It really depends on what kind of sound your after. Do you have any particular tone your trying to achieve?

Well, let me post this...the Phish song "Free" is the first time I heard envelope filter way back when I didn't have a big musical library, and this is pretty much the sound I want (or the sound I'd primarily use). The main part starts at 1:55.

Now I know that Mike Gordon uses a Lovetone Meatball, so I figured the GR would be the pedal I wanted...then I saw the Uriah Duffy video with the M82 and it was just such an awesome sound.

Yes! The Groove Regulator really works well in a live setting. Thats where this pedal really shines. (IMO)

I havent used the new MXR filter yet, but after watching the Duffy video of it, I wasnt to impressed.

Yeah, I think what it comes down to is this: The GR is worth the extra money to get more versatility. Nothing against the MXR, because I haven't tried either one myself, but from the videos online and the reviews, the GR can get a lot of sounds, and has a great price tag, in my opinion.

Yeah, that's a sound you can cop with the GR. It's definitely on the subtler side as filters go which means that more of your tone comes through. The original Meatball got much "wetter" than the GR I had was capable of but for the tone Mike Gordon is using there, the Groove Regulator would work perfectly.

As others have said, the beauty of the Groove Regulator is that it took most of the best parts of the Meatball and created a MUCH more user friendly pedal that is easy to dial in and pretty much always sounds good.

I think it's wet enough for me, but what I particularly like about it is that even when you go ap3sh1t with the thing, the sound remains consistent-- you get the nice gloopy sounds, but chunks of the frequency spectrum don't just drop out entirely the way they did with some other filters I've tried.

+1. You could definitely cop that sound with the GR. It's control scheme is easily one of the most intuitive among the filters I've tried. You won't get a whole lot of nothing when your just twisting knob like so many filters out there.
