Guidance for an effects virgin

So I'm thinking it's time to try out some sort of overdrive on a few songs. Having never really been much into stomp boxes, I'm looking for some ideas for something under $100.

Something with a little edge, not an all out metal distortion.

In that price range the DOD 250 is popular. Also check the TB classifieds often, as I regularly see good pedal deals in there.

Anyone know where you can actually get one of these in the US?

My local Ashdown dealer says "they're not out yet, don't know when"

I'll let you know what I think of my modified Bad Monkey from Humphrey Audio when I get it in a couple of days...at $95, maybe it will fit the bill.

Well, assuming he's still building them, the "Polish Love Pedal" is the effect du jour at TB. It is apparently a Red Llama clone and a fairly versatile gain pedal at a reasonable price.

If you're willing to wait a few weeks to get one that is . . .

That pedal, albeit a great one, does not fit his description of a light overdrive, instead falls into the Fuzz categorey.

You can pick up a stock Bad Monkey for about $50, and it should do what you're looking for. I use mine a lot.
