Guitar effects that work great for bass

Heh heh for another post.....right, chilliwilli?.

Digitech Grunge for distortion. Does not allow lower notes to get muddy at all.

Boss BF-2 Flanger

MXR Phase 90

They are all simple, apply themselves very well to bass and are accurate in effecting the low end.

I agree with the Boss Flanger, and I'd also add the Boss Chorus. Any of the Electro Harmonix muffs are great for bass too.

Honestly, the great majority work just fine for bass.

+1, and if not, all you have to do is get a decent blend to make them work just fine.

Gromguten - Onkart Gromt.

Very little low-end loss, nice sounding distortion.

This ^^^.

If a non bass-dedicated pedal doesn't seem to work well within a chain, it might be related to its chain location.

Any Muff, particularly the Ver7 Sovtek-era Muffs. They sound great.

+1 on Boss BF-2 Flanger, which sounds great. I think Jason Newsted used that on some Metallica albums.

The Boss HM-3 Hyper Metal pedal sounds excellent on bass, and IMO gives the Bass Muff Pi a real run for its money.

Also, EHX makes a cool pedal called the Stereo Electric Mistress, which has flanger and chorus effects. It is a simple pedal to use, which is a kind way of saying that it doesn't have many customizeable options, but sometimes simple is better. It sounds good on bass, too. Video demo here.

There are several distrotion pedals that you should stay clear of because they absolutely suck out all the bottom end, like the Boss OS-2 (Overdrive/Distortion).
