Guitar preamp through Hartke amp

Sign in to disble this ad
So one night I go into my garage to get gear out for the nights gig and realize that the've broken into my garage and stolen my beringer 400W amp. luckly i have a 12" combo. So then I decided to buy a "DJ" crown (100W ... i really wanted an upgrade) power amp, EQ, rack bag. tried it at a gig and it gave a pretty sweet bass. I'm talking about a concrete floor vibrating off my fretted low D on my b string. but the gig was dark and I had alot of trouble seeing where to plug myself in due to the fact that this stuff is not meant to be "portable" but I managed it with my rack bag. But I wanted my amp to work less cause I had it all the way up. so I decided to get a DigiTech GSP1101 Rackmount Guitar Preamp/Effects Processor. with my 2x10 it does a good job but at a low volume. I tried it at a gig and I was completely burried. Everyone turned around and was like... yo!! turn you bass up!!! I had all my equipment at 10. the eq, the crown amp, the guitar effects ... what up with that. So I talked about it with a friend and said... man how much did you spend? ... it was pretty green.

Bro get a bass amp man!!!

so I did. got the Hartke LH1000.
I really want to take advantage of the guitar effects processor so I bought another rack bag mounted the hartke the digitech. I had to mess with the volumes a little. I figured that I wanted the hartke to work less for the same amount of input so my solution was to have the preamp all the way up. which created a loud idle hiss. (can't notice that in crowed areas) so but alot of people noticed and so both the hartke and the preamp are about half way.

I've lent out my GK 4x10 to a friend of mine for his own gig and he believes he's blown my speakers. I played them afterward at a gig and all 4 speakers move but I've noticed that it do the concrete vibration. ... its just loud/punchy. but didn't handle low-low bass. it was just muddy so between songs I would continously finkle with both EQs.

This past saturday I just had enough... I couldn't find my sound. so I disconnected my preamp and went directly to the hartke. Voila! the LOW END!

now ... it may be me but I remeber it being louder handle bass like a superstar. its not like that "anymore" but my friend believe he might have blown something cause his amp tripped while he was performing and heard scratchand pop noises and he re-setted himself. - according to him.

The point of all this is pretty much summed up here. I want to use the preamp and the hartke. with the powerful low end that I got with just the amp.

anybody got some insight.

1- harkte alone works fine.
2- digitech w/harkte doesn't handle...
let me explain my set up here I have the bass plugged into the input of the preamp. left/mono output of the preamp is plugged into the input of the hartke. speakon cable to my 2x10 and a jack from my 2x10 to my 4x10. 2x10 is 800W. 4x10 is 400W. both volumes are set at 12 noon. once in a while in my EQ endeavors its at 2 or even 3 o'clock. (but bass sounds over modulated. EQ the bass lower and until the bass is calm.) at this point I'm being hit by a brick wall of punchyness but very weak on the LOW LOW END.
2a- digitech w/ harte doesn't handle like hartke alone. (mind you that I want the effects of the preampe
3-speakers don't feel as powerful as they first did when got the hartke about 2.5 months ago. lent them to my homie about 1.5 months ago.

POINTS 2 & 3 lead me to believe that the speakers are not blown cause it still handles the amp like a championette. (at this point I'm being really discriminative of my sound, others that are not familiar with my equipment would think I'm being too picky... but I know what my speakers are capable of)

thanks in advance!

Have you thought about running the Digitech through one amplifier into one cabinet, and the Hartke into another cabinet? A 'bi-amp' with no crossovers; you could have a similar setup to what John Entwistle was using shortly before he died. All the guitar-like distortion and effects you could ever want, but with all of the clean low end and lower midrange you need.

that sounds very plausable excepy for the fact that the crown weighs about 40lbs. and my hartke weighs about 40lbs. i would in this case place 2 rack bags of 4 space each on top of my cabs. the potential seems awsome but i would be overdoing it at most of the places i play at (crowds of 50-250?) the hartke and the digitech is just as friggin heavy as my 4x10... well almost. let alone carring 2 amps. this fall im doing a latin festival: definitely doing that setup. but i need something more practical
