handling very different basses.. eq pedal?

Sign in to disble this ad
so after a few years of waiting/hunting for the perfect one, I finally was able to purchase one of my dream basses.. a MINT gibson ripper from 1973.

I've also been playing my Bongo for 2 years now, and love it since day one. I plan on using them separately, one for each project I'm on. however we rehearse in the same place, ie on the same amp. I was able to dial "the" tone on my GK for the Bongo. just a bit of subtle eqing, and it's perfect both for me and the band. so I don't intend to change that. but I played the ripper through it, and well.. that doesnt do it at all. it requires some dramatic eqing, which is only suitable for the ripper. otherwise it's only great on the A and D string, the E has no punch and G is unhearable

so I was wondering.. since the eq I usually use for the Bongo is only subtle (almost flat), could I just get a eq pedal a la Boss GEB-7 or mxr 108, that I'd carry along with the ripper? (or another pedal, and which?) or do you think it's rather stupid and I should just eq the amp every time?

thanks in advance for the suggestions!

I would get an EQ pedal for the Ripper, yes, and I would leave the amp EQ flat and dial in any needed EQ changes onboard the Bongo and on the pedal for the Ripper.

I had the same issue with my two basses in the past and had a parametric EQ pedal on my board to take care of this.

aye, thanks for the fast replies people!

I'm leaning toward the GEB-7 as it seems reliable, inexpensive and easily transportable. any other suggestion?

The radial bassbone is nice for this kind of situation. It's a preamp/tonebox/DI, a little like the Aguilar Tonehammer, but with A/B functionality (specifically for managing 2 basses) - seperate tone controls for the 2 channels, plus boost and effects loop (which can be a handy place to stick an additional eq if desired).

It's rather large, but a Boss EQ-20 handles presets and would work.
