Long story short - it does normal flanging okay but is best as a wacky noise box, at least on bass. Problem is, at more extreme settings it doesn't hold the low end all that well. IMO anyway. |
I have not used the A/DA but yes, I had the HBE version for a spell, and from what I understand, they are very close in character (although I once read that the HBE is wilder). Like Jared said, it was less than ideal as a regular flanger, but was AMAZING as a noisemaker.
Funny thing about phasers and flangers on bass, in my experience, the more low end loss they exhibit (at one end of the sweep), the better they stand out in a mix. Something to do with what I like to call...
the wobble factor. Here are some in tha mix clipz that demonstrate just that:
Quadrance - 2009 Thusfar (flangitize the beginning)
Quadrance - Incum (flangerization of the end)
I must admit, I traded the Frost Bite for a Hartman many moons ago, and never regretted the decision. But I'll probably pick up one of these A/DA Flanger reissues, because it's far too unique of an effect.
