...and come on, can't you guys dig anything that's not a standard, clean, warm bass tone? I guess its just a difference of musical preference.

What I find exceedingly difficult to dig someone screaming their lungs out at me, and a complete lack of mids or clarity from the bass. They say the bass is supposed blend in with the mix, but not to the point that you couldn't pick it out if you tried. Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of having a bass player? |

I mean heck, I've tried out over 15 fuzz pedals this year (half of them Devi Ever, so there's some extreme stuff there)
That music just sounds horrid to my ears.

I have never heard this band before this moment, but from the first notes I can almost assure you it is a RAT of some sort.

my nephew likes this style and I was about to tell my brother, man that's not music...but I thought better because when we (my bro and I) were learning back in the 60's our parents probably thought the same thing about our playing and musical tastes

I could make out the bass fine. It's detuned and distorted, but massive. Sure, it is locked in with the kick and often doubles the guitar but it's absolutely there and distinguishable. Contrast that with the majority of 80's metal (including Cliff Burton) where the bass is mixed out entirely.
2nd - I do agree with Joe. If someone posts a clip looking for how to achieve a tone I don't think they really need to be hammered for their musical tastes. Personally I dug the music - cool doom stuff. The vocals aren't at all my thing but I would have never mentioned that if the thread hadn't unfolded as it did.
Finally, I agree with nad. That doesn't sound like tube overdrive/distortion to me either. It might be a tube amp, but there's some added dirt there. |

All examples of RATs in use. I'm quite sure the original poster's fit featured a RAT, or a similar distortion/fuzz.

I used to get this kind of tone live for drone rock with a crate B100 pushed way over the limits.
