Both are played with a pick, muted with the right hand and both are through tube amps which has a lot to do with that tone. But only the first example you posted has a slap back delay on the bass, the Zep does not. JPJ's picking technique on that song just gives it that illusion. The delay on the first track doesn't sound digital to me, sounds more vintage analog mixed with some spring reverb. The slap back is tempo dependent, an eighth note at 120 bpm is something like 250ms. You just have to play around with it a bit until you find the right depth and speed. The Depth or Level controls (depending on the pedal) control how loud the slap back is, the higher you dial it the more slap back you will hear. Feedback controls how long the delay lasts, and speed (pretty obvious by the name) controls the speed of the slap back. The higher you dial that the faster the slap back will be. Sorry if any of this sounds at all patronizing, I just don't know how much experience you have (if any) using delay pedals.

Cheers.

Well I can recommend some, but pedals don't come cheap. If you are only getting these for one song I'd say either do the song without effects or just skip it altogether.

That being said, for a good spring reverb sound from a pedal I recomend the 'Boss FRV 1 - 63 Fender Spring Reverb Pedal' which retails for about $129.

Here's a link to a video demo:

And for a great sounding analog delay there is the "Electro-Harmonix Memory Man Deluxe" which retails for about $320

If you are on a budget though, you could always go digital. For a live situation most people wouldn't notice the difference.

The 'Boss DD3' is a solid delay pedal that retails new for about $110. But you could probably find a used one on eBay or craigslist for less.

Good luck.

Yup, that's exactly the sound--which I really love myself. It's as much technique as equipment, maybe moreso technique. Cool thing is that picking style is really easy to get down and you can mix it up with overdrive or fuzz or whatever for a really unique sound; it is also one of the few techniques that, in my opinion, actually works/isn't overly muddy with reverb on bass.

Tape echo is the best of the best (in just about everyone's opinion)
Roland RE-201, Echoplex, Echorec, etc

but they AREN'T pedals, they cost a lot, they require occasional maintenance... and they are SOOOOO WORTH IT

Otherwise, I'd look into the Moogerfooger or Skreddy delay.
Way more delay than you need for just a slapback sound, but again, you said "the best of the best"

Honestly though, considering your needs... just get a Danelectro delay.
