Have you nailed John Taylor's tone on Rio (Duran)?

If someone out there already nailed that tone, I'd love to hear how you did it. Tools at my disposal: Schecter 5 with dual humbuckers and Bartolini NTMB, P, J, BDDI, Pod X3, VT Bass (prolly not that one!). Especially helpful: If you've got (or created) a patch for a Pod that you could send me!

Thanks,

-jb

I am interested in this as well. I love playing that song, it would be cool to nail the tone. I only have a modulus Genesis with 2 bartolini J pickups, and a zoom B2.1u, but I am shopping for toys these days, and would be willing to shop specifically for this sound.

That song is FUN to play.

Sorry, I don't know how to get that sound, I tried.
I must say, he is one of the best to come out of the 80's, along with Simon Gallup.

I am tempted to say boost the frequency around 250hz.
That should give you a fatter sound. I don't hear much high end or low end. He has a very bouncy sound, kind of like a Wal bass.
And I think seamus may be right, he might use chorus.

It's an Aria Pro II SB1000. And if I remember rightly from stuff I've read, an HH head (live, anyway). He uses Peavey gear nowadays.

I can sit for hours and play through Duran's albums start to finish. The username gives it away a bit.

Yep..so whatever you do to try and get the tone, only use your bridge pickup.

I can't nail the tone as recorded but my Stingray 4H comes close enough with the treble rolled off a tad.

We've started fooling around with this album, I put my 70's Jazz on the bridge pickup and play it straight into the amp (800RB w/Hartke 410 and 115), and it sounds pretty close to the sound on Rio (song). I think the pickup position and right hand finger position has a lot to do with the sound. I haven't tried any chorus, I'm going to listen to it again tonight to see if I can hear any.

Same here. The Stingray has a different character to the Aria, partly down to the P position pickup in the middle of the body on the Aria. He used the same bass for the first album too, and you can hear a sort of 'woodyness' coming through.

Amen to that! Both were grossly under-rated IMHO especially Taylor who had many very tasty and melodic bass lines.

Bringing this back to the subject of effects, I know he used rackmount chorus, flanger and delay units (not sure which, specifically). As well as a Moog Taurus unit, for the intro on 'New Religion'. For most DD recordings, I believe the bass is double tracked for the chorus-y effect.

I've done it with a Sterling H,and a Kubicki X-Factor. The only way your going to "nail it" is to use exactly what he used in the studio. You best bet is to get close and run with it.
