HBE Bajo Mos SOUNDCLIPS

The HBE Bajo Mos is a bass specific mosfet clean booster capable of 15 dB of boost. I promised a comparison between this and the Wren and Cuff Phat Phuk B, as it's the only other bass specific booster I know of (other than the Markbass, but I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE Markbass).

Well the Bajo Mos doesn't have as much gain on tap as the Phat Phuk B, so it won't push an amp as far into overdrive as the Phat Phuk, which is what I expected. It also doesn't have any dirt or really any coloration of it's own, also unlike the Phat Phuk. The Phat Phuk is a little more versatile because of those features, especially if you're not running it into a tube amp because it can still give you that little touch of overdrive and growl that a lot of players love. However the Bajo Mos is a great sounding booster, and perfect for those players that love their tone as it is, but just want a little bit more out of their tube amp.

Right now I'm running my bass with D'addario Chromes (flatwound strings). Here are some clips, first off, then on:

Then some Stones:

Then I tried messing with my wah with the Bajo Mos on:

Then an example of using the Bajo Mos as a solo boost:

To hear the Phat Phuk B for comparison, check out my clips on the Wren and Cuff website:

Those clips are done with roundwound strings, but you should get the idea.

So check 'em out, compare 'em, and let me know what you think!

And with just my bass channel. I think it shines best here.

Wow. I'm surprised the Bajo Mos had less gain then the Phat. Usually mosfet-based boosters have a ridiculous amount of gain/vol.
Thanks for the comparison Mark.

No problem. That's me, I have to try everything and compare them when I can.

I guess the best way I can put it is the Phat Phuk B is the one you want if you're looking for a "magic box" to add something special to your tone or send an amp into meltdown and the Bajo Mos is the one for just a straight up little bit of boost that doesn't really add anything to the tone.

I've also compared these pedals to the boost on the ZVEX Box of Rock, which is like a Super Hard On with a little bit less glass. As much as I love glassy tube tones, the ZVEX boost was a little more lean in the lows than the Phat Phuk particularly, and the Bajo Mos too. I can't describe it, but the sound just didn't give me the same response as the other boosters in a way that makes me prefer the Phat Phuk and Bajo Mos. I've always wanted to try out a Super Hard On boost, and with the Vexter issue of it out now it's tempting, but most of my GAS for one has been quashed by the Phat Phuk, which just works so much better with bass I think.

Clip with the amp cranked up a bit more. Still flatwound strings.

Amp cranked up to 3 o'clock then boosted with the pedal.

Amp cranked and boosted with the Bajo Mos with rotosound flats on my guitar. I use my Custom Bass Wah from Wilson Effects in the middle there.

Amp at nine o'clock, using my new neck pickup only. Altogether a nice beefy sound which gives me that SG midrange grunt and moan I'd been missing.

Here it is off then on with that setting so you can hear the difference. Again, doesn't add the color and mojo of the Phat Phuk, but I like it for what it does.
