Headrush Tape Echo setting without the headrush

Sign in to disble this ad
Been really inspired by Russian Circles lately and want to expand my looping and delay capabilities.

I have a Headrush E2 that I love. The looping setting is great. The Tape Echo setting is great. I want them both, but one of the limitations of the Headrush is that only one function can be used at one time.

I really like volume swells and tremelo picking with the tape echo.

So, besides getting another headrush, what pedal would you reccomend that would be a good substitue for the Tape Echo setting?

Preferably smaller and cheaper than a headrush.

I have an Arion SAD-1 (stereo analog delay) and it is not a lush as the Headrush.

I'm thinking carbon copy, but haven't had a chance to try one out. I know that the any of the boss DD pedals won't cut it, I've tried.

The Carbon Copy is nice (though mine was busted) and the new Malekko 616 looks like it will be worth checking out.

But the Carbon Copy (and most analog delays) are darker sounding than the Akai. Primarily, they have a softer attack on subsequent repeats.

A relatively cheap solution is the Echo Park in Tape Mode.

Good call on the echo park! Didn't think about that one!

Thanks!

i was similarly bummed when i found out the headrush couldn't do delay and loop at the same time. i'm thinking about trading it for the DL4, but the major advtage of the 'rush is it's seperate outs. i run a cable to my PA and really dig having the delayed effect only come through the PA and my clean tone unaffected through my bass rig. works like a charm to get cleaner repeats with fuzz too. the same can be said in loop mode, it's really great to be able to loop really gnarly effected basslines and stack a clean melody on top with it being all degraded through one set of speakers.

the "warmth knob" of the headrush i really like too. the carbon copy was too murky for my droptuned stingray and was quickly lost in a band setting. it sounded really good during more quiet moments though.

Hey, there's a Hardwire DL-8 in the classifieds that might fit the bill.

Honestly? The Dano tape model is really nice for what it is/what it costs. I've started to get over this whole fear of cheaper effects and found some really cool things.

But I will forever support a dual Headrush setup.

You know, although I have to say that I'm not a big fan of the analog sim or modulation modes, I actually kinda like the tape sim on the DD-20. I think it does a pretty credible job of decaying the signal, but not so much that its all mush after 2 repeats like some others. Just a thought

I saw that, but for $140 I'll throw in an extra $10 to buy another headrush. They go for $150 all day long. I scored on my first one and got it for $110 including shipping. I am intersted in your case. How much for your case and the bypass looper?

I love cheap effects, but then again I'm kinda cheap. I'd rather scour the internet for twp weeks to save $20 on a pedal then buy it at market value and have it for those two extra weeks. I bought a behringer slow motion brand new (which I hardly ever do) and it was sweet until I tried out a volume pedal. Then I bought a volume pedal and sold the slow gear. With the cheapies, sometimes you win, more often you lose.

I'll check out the Dano reel echo. It satifies two out of three requirements. (It's cheap with a good delay, but big)

I think that three headrushes would be ideal, one as a full time delay, and two as full time loopers going to two different amps.

So far I've been running everything through the mix out. I tried running all the different tape head outs, but you need five amps to properly utilize it. The cheaper solution in my head is to run two headrushes and two amps.

i've been pretty satisfied sending the tape outs to inputs each on my mixer > PA speakers.

I just had an idea based on what you said. Get two amps and cabs. Take the dry out and split between the two amps. Take tape head out 1 and 3 to the first amp and 2 and 4 to the other. It would probably require some sort of junction box or multiple A/B/Y boxes, but it would give you ping pong delay. I'm going to have to try that out when I get home.

I guess if you panned the inputs on your mixer, you'd get the same results from the PA.

Well, I got the Dano yesterday. It's not what I was looking for. It sounds more like an analog delay than a tape delay, and I already have analog delay covered with my arion SAD-1. The hold feature is kinda neat. I just wish that the pedal was smaller. It could easily be half its current size.

I'm thinking that I'm going to try an echopark or a digidelay at a music store and see how that goes. If that doesn't work, I'm just going to bite the bullet and get another headrush.

So, any one want to buy a Danelectro Tape Echo for $70 shipped?

Digidelay isn't it either. Tried one out on my lunch break.

Echopark is up next!

i had the echo park on my board for about a year. the swell delay setting is unlike anything i've ever heard, kind of like a phaser + delay, super cool. there are a couple other unique settings to that pedal but in the end it was too digital sounding and i hated the flimsy switch. hope you dig it.

I tried the Echo Park and it was the closest I found, but it was at Guitar Center and there was some toolbag playing "wipeout" and other reverb heavy songs with the amp at 11 most of the time I was there, so my experience with it was probably a little biased.

On the bright side, I found a Headrush E1 on craigslist for $45 ($60 shipped)! So, I'm stoked and set.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
